Project Recap: 4311 Centre is a new four-storey office and retail complex in Red Deer. Located on the site of the former Inland Concrete plant, the new complex will have retail outlets on the main floor with office space on the remaining floors. There will be underground parking as well as on-site parking. This project is an excellent use of a former industrial site. It is located in the downtown region and re-uses vacant industrial land; thus, no farmland is destroyed, limit...ing urban sprawl and reclaiming an existing site. An extensive traffic impact study was required for the project, and traffic flow will be improved by the new accesses to the property. 4311 Centre is currently under construction, with construction getting closer and closer to completion. There are many exciting updates coming with this project as is nears closer to completion so be sure to check back as more updates become available! See more

Berry Architecture has a long-term relationship assisting the Central Alberta Immigrant Women's Association. Our talented Architectural Designer, Jherlyn, came to us through CAIWA's job placement program and has been with us ever since! We have done pro bono work for the group beginning with their first space in the River Valley building. They have now purchased their own building in downtown Red Deer, and we are helping them with a tenant fit-up project to modify their main floor to include classroom space, computer lab, preschool classroom, commercial kitchen, and meeting space. The second floor will have two more offices added to the layout. RBW Consulting Ltd. and 908 Engineering are also assisting with this pro bono project.

In our office, our designers like to visualize new project designs with hand sketches. By using trace paper, they can quickly sketch out similarly size buildings and start playing around with how they want materials to site on the building and what features they want to stand out on each elevation. This is also a quick exercise that can help them understand what our clients are looking for in the design and what they do and don't like about the different styles without having to spend a lot of time inputting information on the computer!

This week we had other fun social club activity to keep us busy. This month we did a craft at the office and all of the participants were able to decorate 3 mason jars for fall! They can be used as candle holders, for little gifts or just general decoration! It was a creative couple of lunches for everyone who participated. Thank you to Tracy Wells for the lovely little photo shoot she had with her completed jars!

Renderings can come in many forms. We can make realistic renders with materials and entourage. We can also make renders that have more of a sketch-like appearance. These show more of the intent of the design rather than the materials intended to be used. The Ing + McKee Insurance building had examples of both types of renders and we love how they all turned out!
