So let me tell you a story [long read]. It's about a house, an architect, a family and a neighbourhood. First, let me tell you about the house. The house was b...uilt by a talented young architect named Joe. Joe was an amazing guy. Joe built amazing homes. 211 Llydican is one of them. It has all the gorgeous elements of classic and timeless mid-century modernism: large floor-to-ceiling windows to welcome in both nature and natural light, ingenious and practical built-ins, easy traffic flow from room to room, perfectly situated on a gorgeous lot, and so much more (check the link below for all the bells and whistles). His residential designs just made sense. And they were great for parties too. Let me tell you about Joe. Joe could have stayed in Toronto after graduating (one of the first graduating classes in Architecture at the University of Toronto) like his fellow students. There was much more opportunity there, as society began the post-war boom. But he moved back to Chatham, to his girlfriend (soon wife) and family. He built his career, both literally and figuratively, in Chatham-Kent. He opened an office in his mid-20s in 1947, which remained open until just last year. He chose Chatham-Kent. He was a Rotarian and Past President of Rotary Club of Chatham, a Commodore of the Rondeau Yacht Club and an extremely talented artist: drawing, painting and photography were his specialties. If you had an artwork or photgraph done by Joe, you were lucky. If you had a home designed by Joe, you were even luckier. Let me tell you about the family. Joe and his wife Marjorie raised four kids (including my dad Tom, the oldest, along with Charlotte, Kim and Mark) in a home he designed just around the corner at 210 Victoria. I was fortunate enough to spend much of my early years at 210 with Grandma Marge, surrounded by fabulous MCM design, furniture and architecture. I didn’t realize it was unique and different, as it was just normal to me. 210 as all of our family still refers to it, was also owned by Uncle Augie and Aunt Marian until the early 2000s, so our family got to enjoy it for several generations. I hope the current owners enjoy it as much as our families did. Over time my brother Brad and his family owned a gorgeous Storey home on Llydican for many years (original owners Uncle Augie and Aunt Marian!) and recently downsized into a Storey-designed home on the south side of town. While we grew up on Llydican surrounded by my Grandpa Joe’s homes, my parents did not have the chance to own one until 2006, after the original owners of 211 (the Legate family) passed away after living in the home for over 40 years. Joe’s style and approach were so treasured by the Legates, and then by our family, that we didn’t want to change much of anything. It didn’t need it. The design and style are as fresh and stylish in 2019 as it was in 1962. It is remarkable. Finally, let me tell you about the neighbourhood. I am totally biased, but I truly believe it's the best street in town. We moved to Llydican when Meghan was just a few months old and I was 4. The street was FULL of young families like ours. The DeKonings twins were next door, the four Griffioen kids were across the street, the Gebals and Comiskeys just a few doors down, the Rossini kids a few doors down from that, the Ashers, Clarks and Wells, Parkers and Kirkhams around the corner not to mention the visiting grandkids of many retirees who were original residents of the street. I walked to McKeough School every day, twice a day from kindergarten with Mrs. Craven to Grade 8 with Mrs. Simpson. My nephews, who grew up down the street, did the same at King George. Not too long after we moved in, newlyweds Peter and Patty Cobb moved in next door. Growing up with Peter and Patty (and eventually, Laura, Shani and Michael) next door is a highlight of my life. I spent countless hours playing HORSE on our basketball hoop with Peter and babysat the Cobb kids. There are some new families and faces on the street now and new kids too, which is great to see. I hope they enjoy the circle and all the benefits of living in a friendly neighbourhood on a street with virtually no traffic. It is perfect for road hockey, Free the Bunch, building snow forts, great trick-or-treating, Capture the Flag, bike riding, frisbee, chalk art, and so much more (speaking from experience ). So there you have it. 40 years later, almost to the day, it’s time to move on. While I haven't "officially" lived on Llydican for a while now, in my heart I never left. Now it's your chance to own a beautiful home designed by a talented and accomplished architect. To live on a great street surrounded by friendly and supportive neighbours. To raise a family, or just to enjoy some peace and quiet on a private cul-de-sac. And I wish whoever becomes the next owners of 211 that this home and this neighbourhood give them as much joy and happiness as we had.
