The Good Food Bus will be hosting a "Stuff the Bus" toy drive on Thursday, December 17 at the Sydney River Walmart from noon to 5 pm. Organizers will be collecting donations of new toys (for kids ages 0-18) and new pyjamas (any age, any size). All items collected will be donated to families in need during a free holiday market hosted by A Better Bite Community Kitchen.... The free holiday market is a ticketed event and tickets were distributed earlier this week. A Better Bite Community Kitchen and The Good Food Bus worked with local community organizations to identify families in need. Each family attending the free holiday market will be able to select the items they are most in need of including groceries, new toys, personal care items, pet food, winter accessories, and much more without having to worry about the financial burden that, even in the best of times, often comes with the holiday season. http://betterbitekitchen.ca//good-food-bus-hosts-stuff-th/

A lot has happened over the past four months. Since the state of emergency was declared in Nova Scotia, we have been preparing 200 additional meals each week for those in need a staggering 80% increase. This would not have been possible without our brand-new kitchen!! The Better Bite kitchen has expanded to The Convent (170 George Street, Sydney), moving to a larger facility to better serve our New Dawn Meals on Wheels clients and other community organizations. We are especially grateful for the continuous support of United Way Cape Breton and United Way Canada. United Way funding for the Good Food Packs program is used to provide family, individual, and school grocery hampers to those in need. Without the financial support of the United Way, at both the regional and national levels, our response to COVID-19 would not be what it is. I found I didnt feel alone. I felt somebody had my back. One of the many appreciative comments that New Dawn Meals on Wheels is hearing on a daily basis. In... the April alone, the Meals on Wheels program served 1,954 meals. And to date, 2,598 food hampers have been delivered. These are big numbers. And this kind of service doesnt just happen. Over the last few years New Dawn has continued to invest in their food programs; hiring more staff, expanding their food programs, and most recently, renovating a new and expanded kitchen space. This investment in staff and food infrastructure is truly showing its value now, as New Dawn has emerged as a key player in the emergency food response to the Covid-19 crisis. New Dawn Meals on Wheels is needed now perhaps more than ever. They were already in the business of doing door-to-door delivery of affordable, nutritious meals to vulnerable populations. Now, theyre seeing a dramatic increase in the demand for this service as everyone (especially the elderly and the immunocompromised) have been encouraged to stay at home. And theres more. When the pandemic began to unfold, we asked ourselves what else can we do to help? We came up with the Good Food Packs program. These packs are being delivered to families and individuals experiencing food insecurity and financial barriers as a result of shelter-at-home directives amid the COVID-19 pandemic. explains New Dawn. They have been working closely with other community organizations in CBRM to make sure those that need this help, are connected and have access to it.
