The owners of this new summer retirement home in Hampton wanted the outdoors to have a clean modern look. Betz created a modern backyard focused on family entertaining with a custom vinyl pool, spa, shade structure and equipment room. A deck of square acid-etched concrete slabs supports the modern look. An in-floor cleaning system not only cleans the pool but lowers heating costs by distributing heated water across the bottom. The owners didn’t want a typical pergola, so Bet...z built a bold modern structure using 8 x 8 Douglas Fir posts jointed to sturdy 2 x 6 roof louvres. Its width helps to hide the adjoining pool equipment room. Frosted glass panels add splashes of light to the black wall. Betz also gave the front yard a modern look using geometric sections banded in black granite. There’s a sharp drop off to the backyard, so they designed banks of steps with overhanging, floating slabs of acid etched concrete. This video, taken by one of our employees who is fine tuning his video production skills, shows work in progress on a large Gunite negative edge infinity pool in Muskoka. It shows glimpses of the plumbing lines in gravel, yellow spray insulation over gravel, plywood forms for exterior walls, reinforcing steel skeleton, application of dry Gunite and the final roughed-in pool shell. Next, the plumbing will be hooked up, the pool will be filled and then fully winterized awaiting... completion in the spring. When finished, this custom pool will make quite a statement with its large tanning shelf and dramatic negative edge spill wall running its full length of almost 50 feet. This fully-renovated backyard graces a rebuilt home near Niagara on the Lake. The aging pool required a total rebuild including pressure testing to fix leaks, installation of new plumbing lines, fittings, skimmers, pool lights and a premium interior finish. The pool’s infinity edge did not function properly, so by improving recirculation and adding an auto-leveller the water level remains constant along the spill wall. Still evenings are special for an infinity pool when the ...glass-like surface melds beautifully with the horizon beyond. The existing stone coping, which included the pool’s unique splash benches, was removed, refurbished and reinstalled along with the paving stone patio. The original spa only served as a soaker tub, so the stone cladding was removed, it was retrofitted with spa jets, the interior refinished and now functions beautifully as a spa. After completing a ‘cottage feel’ renovation of their new country home this young family decided to deck out the backyard for family fun. This series of photos shows how Betz designed a quarry style pool and patio with a ‘blasted out of rock’ look. Sometimes when we do a complete backyard makeover the owners say, "While you're here, why not give us a design to show how we could spruce up the front! That’s exactly what happened in this project where we added all the outdoor elements to complement an extensive modern-look renovation of the home. The home’s floor-to-ceiling glass front left it exposed to headlights and traffic disturbances, so we built a series of tall gently-rolling berms to create a natural barrier. ...Our redesign not only provides privacy but creates a gorgeous view to enjoy from the living room. Image 1 shows a bubbler rock spilling gently into a stream that serves as the yard’s pleasing focal point. Image 2 shows how our designers transformed the home’s front yard into a tranquil forest glen. The gently curving stream trickling from a waterfall runs 180 back to the front of the house. In Image 3 you can see how the berms lend visual interest and create privacy. The highlight of this tranquil natural sanctuary is a trickling stream fed by a year-round waterfall. The stand of mature trees was augmented with shrubs, ground covers, and boulders to provide an Ontario woodland feel. Every turnkey backyard design is unique, but some pose particularly interesting challenges for our designers. This new home in Etobicoke sits on a pie-shaped lot sheltered by a massive city-protected maple tree which we had to work around. The owners wanted a full-featured backyard for entertaining and relaxation, so all the primary elements had to be placed around the perimeter of the yard. Image 2 shows you how the Betz designers created unique designs to meet this challeng...e. Since the property borders five neighbouring yards with a new cedar privacy fence at five odd angles, every element in the space required a custom design. These included a 15' x 38' vinyl pool with sheer descent waterfall and deck, outdoor dining area and kitchen, elevated lounge area and storage shed. In Image 3 a sleek cabana roof structure shelters the outdoor dining, kitchen and entertaining space. It’s a favourite venue for watching the big game with friends and no one can resist the scrumptious goodies cooked with the premium Lynx stainless steel appliances. This small Toronto yard is an entertaining oasis that isn’t limited by cooler weather. Guests have two vantage points to enjoy the cozy fire table, either from the comfort of the surrounding lounges, or from the soothing waters of the spa. The custom cedar cabana includes a change room, so it’s easy to transition between the two. This layout has all the essentials for maximum enjoyment of a small urban yard. Guests can refresh themselves from the self-serve bar with fridge at the cabana before gathering at the dining table for eight. Two steps down from the stamped concrete deck leads to the sunken lounge area. This configuration invites conversation between loungers and bathers in the spa, which operates year-round. An underwater bench with spa jets along one side allows bathers to face the lounge area and join in the conversation, all the while enjoying the dancing flames of the fire feature. As the pool season winds down, many pool owners make the most of the season by doing renovations. Some go with basics like relining the interior, replacing the coping, and updating the equipment while others, like the owners of this gorgeously renovated pool, take the opportunity for a complete backyard makeover. For years the owners felt the pool seemed too close to the house, so Betz integrated the two spaces using a raised cedar patio set to the level of the home’s walkouts. Now the backyard feels more like an extension of the home. Image 2 shows the new patio up close. A pair of steps lead to an outdoor dining area covered by a cedar pergola which now supports a dense canopy of foliage and blooms, adding to the outdoor room motif. While building the new backyard, Betz also resolved drainage issues by adjusting levels and slopes. Image 3 reveals how every element of the pool is new, right down to the shell and equipment. We re-covered the white walk-in stairs with grey fibreglass to match the new sandstone PebbleTec vinyl liner. The palette of greys is further complemented by natural stone coping and a stamped concrete deck. Looking at the pool from above in Image 4, you can see how the backyard’s symmetry furthers its contemporary feel. Two chaise lounge areas at the top are separated by a modern garden that’s easily traversed by a stepping-stone path, all in sync with clean lines of the house. The new sheer descent waterfall draws the eye and adds a touch of drama to the space as it pours from a classic ledge-rock wall shielding the garden path. Betz and Arbordale Landscaping completely transformed this dated Toronto backyard into an exquisite leisure paradise. This included renovation of the 40-year-old 19’ x 39’ concrete pool, adding a new spa along with two entertainment-focused structures. These techniques enable more custom options, efficient use of space and superior comfort. Custom walk-in steps eliminate the need for the old standard moulded fiberglass steps. They required a set 3-foot depth for the shallow end, which is too shallow for most people. Another unique Betz feature is the proprietary sump well in the pool wall which saves the owner from pulling out the liner if water collects around the pool after a particularly wet season. In the final image you can see how the custom vinyl-over-steel wedding cake steps at the far end of the pool made the most of the small space. Moulded fiberglass steps would have protruded into the deck close to the fence. Instead, the owners have a comfortable entry point as well as additional deck space for two chaise lounges. Sometimes homeowners use their backyards as a palette to express their hobbies and interests. In this unique project we helped the owners reflect their passion for exotic international travel along with their love for gardening. Image 1 shows how this Toronto family chose a shallow 5' concrete plunge pool as the focal point for an eclectic backyard oasis dotted with garden sculptures and Asian elements. Lush plantings and a series of hand-selected granite boulders add to the ...natural look. In Image 2 you can see how the pool's random angular shape provides a "quarry look" with entry steps and underwater benches at multiple points. A dry river rock stream winds its way to the pool from a secluded existing water feature, running between areas of artificial turf and under a stone bridge with pagoda. The water feature in Image 3 complements the Asian-themed roof structure which provides shelter for an outdoor dining area. The adjoining wooden deck and seating area are accessed by a bright red Asian-style arched bridge. In Image 4 the backyard comes to life after dark with an array of carefully placed garden lights. The pool, surrounding sculptures, and Asian elements are strategically highlighted, while the patio walkways are thoughtfully illuminated. The row of pyramidal cedars lends itself beautifully to uplighting. Image 5 shows how the beautifully illuminated backyard is the dramatic focal point from the home's glass-walled great room. The bright red bridge and arch at the backyard entrance are attractively spot lit, while the shrubs and seating areas are bathed in a soft wash of light that invites lingering and quiet conversation. The custom barbecue station in Image 3 is conveniently next to the home’s kitchen walkout and features luxury Twin Eagles stainless steel components plus a Kamado Joe charcoal barbecue/smoker. Nearby is the outdoor dining table for 10, with casual dining for four at the granite countertop. Image 4 shows a custom barbecue station clad in natural stone with granite countertop. It features a Napoleon Prestige Pro grill complete with matching stainless steel fridge, drawers and double sear station side burner. An existing pool doesn’t need to be replaced to achieve the backyard of your dreams. Even a dated design can be transformed into an inviting backyard oasis complete with all the features you’ve always wanted. Although renovations can be as simple as updating a pool’s interior, replacing tile and coping, or adding new features, sometimes a complete transformation is in order. That was the case for this spectacular uptown Toronto pool. This stunning urban backyard was part of ...a complete full-year redesign of the property. The previous owners had installed a Betz pool and deck which was completely updated to complement the home’s sleek new modern look. In Image 2 you can see that the pool’s classic shape was about the only thing left unaltered. The marbelite interior was replaced with premium Pebble Fina, and for a touch of whimsy, a tiled-mosaic face was added to the shallow end. One-inch mosaic tiles replaced the original slate tiles at the waterline, with their embedded metallic flecks adding a range of sparkling effects in different lighting. Image 3 shows the new outdoor living room and dining area which replaced a seldom used inground hot tub. The lounge area with fire table sits on the new ultra-smooth acid etched concrete deck, replacing the old one of random cut flagstone. For the dining area, an old pressure-treated deck was replaced with premium Brazilian Ipe hardwood and sheltered by a privacy screen. Image 4 shows the artistic elements of the seating area beside the pool’s custom-cast acid etched concrete coping, replacing the original one of flagstone. Since the pool was over 25 years old, it was updated with all new plumping, lighting and accessories including an auto-leveller and Polaris pool cleaner.
