Today we're taking it back to the basics by breaking down the 3 types of Cigar cuts; a straight cut, punch cut, and a v-cut (or wedge cut). The better the quality of the cigars you smoke, the more attention you'll want to pay to the cut. A bad cut can often ruin the experience of a great cigar. The goal of the cut is to create a large, yet smooth opening for smoking w...ithout damaging the structure and integrity of the cigar. 1. Straight Cut This technique is one of the most versatile and common that you can use with scissors, guillotines, or even a sharp blade. The action itself must be quick, while still being very precise. A slow cut will do more harm than good since a prolonged amount of pressure could end up tearing the wrapper or even crushing the tobacco. Tip: try to keep the cigar stationary for a cleaner cut. 2. Punch Cut Punch cuts are essentially what they sound like; they punch a hole or small circle into the head of the cigar. They are typically more affordable compared to other types of cutters and are often attached to a key ring giving them the convenience of being carried around wherever you go. One of the drawbacks to using this type of cut is the fact that saliva or tobacco can easily clog the cigar. First-time smokers prefer this method because of the minimized chances of getting tobacco in the mouth. 3. V-Cut The use of a V-Cut style cigar cutter creates a wedge-like shape in the cap of the cigar. This method of cutting a cigar is very precise but requires some practice and close attention. Once you've mastered this technique, it can give you more control in terms of drawing and a generally cleaner cut. Since the opening is smaller than that of a straight cut, the draw will often result in less smoke. While some cigar enthusiasts prefer this, it is ultimately a matter of preference!
