The continuation of the tub drain leak project. Day 2. Took the gasket and drain piece out from the tub above. At some point in the past, someone had broken the drain piece a bit ... it is only an alloy/plastic. The gasket has worn so is letting water through. Found that the tub had a bit of rust around the opening, but certainly wasn't rusted through. Phew. The gasket from below the tub is very thin and also worn. It is also letting water through. ... Next, I will remove the 1 " pipe from under the tub ... that goop is never going to wash away. I am hoping to also reinforce the floor joist that has been largely cut away for the p-trap.
And after a paint job by the owner, that bathroom is complete!
A slowly developing spot of mould was investigated today. I suited up with goggles, gloves and mask and cut a square in the ceiling. And I did a little checking around in the space under the tub. Turns out the connection right at the tub is leaking and at some point years ago someone applied goop to the connection ... rather than repairing the problem.... Seems that the tub might be rusted away at the drain. Next step, cut out the ABS, disconnect the tub drain and see if the tub is salvageable.
Day 4 and done: Areas that were recoated today and will maybe need a light sanding, but this was a skim coat for the most part.
Coat #3 of mud on this bathroom fix up.
