Rethink your drink Swipe through the pictures and read below... We’ve all heard of tooth decay but many haven’t heard of tooth erosion. It is when acids in yo...ur diet start to dissolve away your teeth - the hardest substance in the human body!! This will happen when the pH drops below 5.5. At least 30% of people are affected to some extent. Picture 1: me with a concerned look about this serious issue . Picture 2: is the outer surface of a tooth (enamel) when exposed to still drinking water, pH is around 7. It is zoomed in 7000x. Note the smooth, intact surface. The way it should be. Picture 3: surface of enamel after being exposed to a sugar free vodka cruiser. It has a pH of 3.2. Note there are more holes than Swiss cheese . Picture 4: surface of enamel after exposure to a Gin and Tonic, pH 2.2!! Note, the enamel has seen better days after a late night. Take home message...you only get one set of adult teeth. If these drinks can dissolve the hardest part of your body it’s scary to think what they would be doing elsewhere. Avoid carbonated and sweetened drinks where possible. If you’re going to have them, drink them through a (biodegradable) straw and chase them with a water, wait at least 30 mins before brushing your teeth, and it’s not a bad idea to have some healthy food around to help stimulate saliva and protect those chompers #rethinkyourdrink
Interesting - take Vitamin C and E together - would never have known this was a help to prevent disease progression.
