Beyond the Build Carpentry and Contracting 03.10.2020

A beautiful brand new forever home in Burlington needed an ergonomic but practical solution for the entry way in their newly finished garage. We designed this simple yet functional landing for our client; as this will be the primary entry point for their family on a day to day basis. Access was left to underneath the landing for additional storage and functionality. A sturdy shelf was added for shoe storage but was also designed at the perfect sitting height so it can double as a bench.

Amid this summers heat wave, Beyond the build was commissioned to convert this existing pergola into something that could offer a bit more relief from the glaring sun. This Hip Roof style pavilion was designed keeping the clients dire need for shade in mind. With them having full sun from around 8 am to 6 pm, functionality and enjoyment of their back yard was being hindered by the unrelenting heat. Beyond the Build loves working with our awesome clients to design structures that meet all functional and aesthetic requirements. Our happy clients can now enjoy sun AND shade in their new pavilion; complete with a space heater, pot lights and ceiling fans. As always, this project was completed on time and with in budget!

Conversion of bearing wall to flush beam. Here we worked within the clients budget, timeline and aesthetic desires; as not to hold his DIY main floor remodeling project up.

An example of a small load bearing wall swap out. A triple 2x8 header was installed in the walls place. Unfortunately, we ran into this Hvac hidden beside the post. We wanted to reduce the column size as much as possible, this was not possible without a host of other changes. There are always surprises in this business, and we do what we can to problem solve and to make our customers happy. The clients here are still in the process of planning the rest of their kitchen renovation, so we left the half wall of paneling in tact, but opened the other side of it for access.

We were hired by another contractor to take care of 3 load bearing walls in this particular house. 2 on the main floor and one on the top floor. As you can see, the two beams really opened up the main floor and allow for a much more breathable and flexible floor plan. The beams we installed "semi flush" in this case. This means that they were tucked as high as possible into the floor joists cavities, but due to the span, the LVL size needed still projects past the ceiling. It sure beats the WHOLE beam being dropped and is a good compromise that balances function, form and costs! In this album you can see what the layout looked like before, a few process pictures and the finished (but rough) product.

It was a pleasure working with this beautiful hand-scraped 7 inch oiled birch flooring. It turned out amazing! We also installed custom stair caps and railings that were stain matched to the flooring. The flush mount vent covers are always a subtle but striking addition. More photos of this project coming soon.

What a transformation of this space. The existing basement finishing was like travelling back in time! We put a useful and contemporary spin on this basement project, and maximized their functionality. There are no photos, but we also added a compact 3 piece washroom, with a shower.
