Music in Masks I Hear You Talking - Cindy Walker 1944 When I hear able-bodied, healthy people say they can’t breathe in a mask, or won’t wear a mask because it’...s uncomfortable this is the song that starts up in my head. These videos take several hours to record, sometimes multiple takes for each frame, since I have to do each in one shot and can’t ‘punch in’ to fix a mistake the way I would when recording just audio. Pretty much the entire recording process is spent in mask. When I am singing, breathing hard behind the mask in vocal takes, you can see the mask pull in. Yes, it is a disconcerting feeling having the cloth suck in around my face, but the more I do these videos the easier it gets to ignore the discomfort. I logically know I’m getting plenty of oxygen through the mask since I’ve done my research and our wonderful healthcare workers are wearing much more extreme PPE for long shifts day after day. This doesn’t change the fact that the first time I sang in a mask I had to stop part way through the song due to hyperventilating. Like anything, it takes practice to function calmly in uncomfortable situations. So that is what I’m doing here, sharing my mask ‘practice’ time with you all, this is me finding a fun way to lean into the challenge of continuing to wear a mask even as people relax and stop wearing theirs. This is me hoping that a silly fun video will help you make the choice whether to lean in and wear yours too. Be safe my friends, we all need our lungs to sing, and if wearing a mask helps me move closer to the days where I can sing with my friends safely, I’m sure as shut going to be wearing mine as long as it takes!
