We've had a mild winter in NL and it has affected the strength and integrity of pond ice. The science behind ice formation is interesting, but fundamentally the key take away is that no ice is safe ice. Check out this pic from last weekend in Torbay. Can you identify the types of ice in this section? We've just returned from Conception Bay where we are running an Ice Rescue Technician course for a local fire department. If you are interested in a career as an outdoor guide, or would like to gain a higher level of medical training in remote/wilderness areas the Canadian Red Cross Wilderness First Responder course may be of interest to you. We are offering this program in Winter 2021 over a series of evening, weekend and overnight sessions. First session begins January 9/10. This 80-hour WFR course is nationally recognized and is scenario-based, so you will engage in significant hands-on practice in the field in a variety of conditions. You wil also receive training in oxygen administration, ariway management and advanced patient assessment. There is an overnight required for the program which includes a night scenario. Wilderness First Responder Program - Winter 2021 Canadian Red Cross No prerequisites required. For a detailed course syllabus please contact us at [email protected]. ... This program is will be offered over a series of evening, weekend and overnight sessions in Winter 2021. Students must attend all sessions, and pass all required written and practical examinations to be successful. The program has a mandatory overnight session, which will require students to bring or arrange for the appropriate Winter camping gear. Gear may be rented from BFA for an additional fee. Overview: This programs is suitable for rescuers or outdoor professionals who specialize in leadership/decision-making, evacuation, and transport in a remote or wilderness setting. It is suitable for those who work in remote emergency services, remote worksites, ski patrol, search and rescue, backcountry guides, etc. Environment: Challenging environments with varied terrain and risk levels. Wilderness First Responders act as part of a designated team in a targeted capacity where survival may be compromised Care: Participants learn skills and strategies for urgent evacuation and, at times, extended care (5+ days) Key Learning Concepts: Leadership skills Expectation to provide care Use of professional tool kit and resources Extrication and rescue decision- making. Schedule: Weekend sessions - January 9 & 10 (0800-1730); January 16 & 17 (0800-1730); February 6 & 7 (Overnight session: 0800 - 1730). Evening sessions (1830 - 2230) January 12, 14, 19, 21; February 2, 4 & 9. Program Fee: $899 + tax. Deposit of 50% due at registration with balance due 7-days from start date.
