Today, there was a heartbreaking view on Parliament Hill. The shoes behind me symbolize Covid-19 deaths in long-term care homes. Profit-driven care is dangerous... and it costs lives. The mismanagement of Long-Term Care homes by the Provincial Government and for-profit providers like Sienna continues to have dire effects on our vulnerable elders in care. Our Federal Government has washed its hands on LTC and deferred to the provinces. This is not acceptable. Sienna is the same for-profit corporation that had to fire it's EVP of Operations after she was was overheard mocking familes after a call with concerned families whose parents were infected with and d...ied from COVID-19. Sienna was more concerned about "blood sucking lawsuits" from families it seems, than doing the right thing and protecting workers and families. And after 5 months since the Armed Forces left "stabilized homes, " Sienna facilities are worse off. Federal New Democrats have proposed immediate fixes like: Ending For-Profit LTC and Home Care. National Standards now. And making LTC part of and accountable to the public healthcare system. Trans lives cannot keep being lost while Police are involved. There are so many unanswered questions. And there is absolutely no excuse for the Police misgendering the living or dead. Community crisis and supports cannot include police as long as people keep dying when they are involved. There must be Justice for Coco.
