October 4 October 10, 2020 is #BeckerMuscularDystrophyAwarenessWeek. In recognition of this week dedicated to raising awareness for Becker Muscular Dystrophy ...(#BMD), we bring you #FastFacts: 1. Becker Muscular Dystrophy is an inherited degenerative muscle disorder, which means it is a genetic disorder that gradually makes the body's muscles weaker and smaller. It causes less severe problems (#milder) and is less progressive than the most common type of dystrinopathies, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. 2. #Dystrophinopathies are a spectrum of X-linked recessive disorders that are due to absence or alteration of the dystrophin protein. Dystrophin is a protein made by muscle cells that doesn't work as it should. A change in the dystrophin gene makes the protein too short. The flawed dystrophin puts muscle cells at risk for damage with normal use. Usually, the body will repair or replace damaged muscle cells. But in Becker MD, the cells die instead. After the muscle cells die, they are replaced by fat and scar tissue. 3. #PediatricOnset Becker muscular dystrophy is characterized by later-onset skeletal muscle weakness. A child with Becker MD may start to walk later than most kids do. But the disease rarely causes health problems until a child has muscle weakness in the hips and pelvis. This usually happens when kids are 1013 years old. Walking problems are usually noticed around age 1516. 4. Among children with the Becker MD gene, boys are most affected with weakness in their arm and leg movements. That's because the dystrophin gene is on the X chromosome. Boys have only one X chromosome, but girls have two. So girls almost always have a second copy of the gene that can make the full, working dystrophin protein. Girls can be #carriers and are at risk of passing this on to their children. Girls can also have symptoms, but in general they are less severe than in boys. A woman who carries the gene has a 50% risk of passing the gene for BMD to each child she bears. Daughters who inherit the mutation will be carriers and may pass the defect on to their children. Sons with the mutated gene will eventually develop symptoms. 5. #AdultOnset With improved diagnostic techniques, it has been recognized that the mild end of the spectrum includes men with onset of symptoms after age 30 years who remain ambulatory into their 60s. 6. Becker MD affects the muscles of the hips, pelvis, thighs, and shoulders, as well as the heart. Despite the milder skeletal muscle involvement, changes in the heart muscle may happen faster than in other muscles and heart failure is a common cause of morbidity. 7. There is no cure for BMD or other muscular dystrophies. However, a variety of treatments help relieve symptoms. 8. Becker MD can be diagnosed via Creatine kinase (#CK) level via a blood test, #musclebiopsy and #genetictesting (look out for a webinar report soon on the different genetic testing techniques!) 9. MDC’s MSAC member, Dr. Toshi Yokota and Fullbright Scholar Dr. Omar Sheikh, published an article in 2020 that noted with the support of newly available genetic diagnosis tools, persons affected by Becker MD can be classied based on #mutations, which is important for future personalized therapies. Neuromuscular disorders are a group of diseases that weaken the body’s muscles. The causes, symptoms, age of onset, severity and progression vary depending on the individual and the exact diagnosis. While some types of neuromuscular disorders are first evident in infancy or early childhood, other types may not appear until later in life. The severity of symptoms, the age at which the symptoms appear, how fast the symptoms progress, and what pattern of inheritance the disorder... follows, are all factors that differ among the various forms of muscular dystrophy. In general, neuromuscular disorders are progressive, causing the muscles to gradually weaken over time. People diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder may lose the ability to do things that are often taken for granted, like brushing their teeth, feeding themselves or climbing stairs. Some people will lose the ability to walk or breathe on their own. Burnaby Firefighters for Muscular Dystrophy is committed to the fight against MD. Until there is a cure, there is us.
