Dr. Anthony Michael (Tony) Melone. Tony was a dear son, brother, husband, colleague, and friend. He died peacefully on November 22, 2020 due to complications from neuroendocrine cancer. He is truly missed. In memory of Tony, the Tony Melone Memorial Fund in Civil Engineering will be established at UBC. The memorial fund is co-funded by his friends at BGC Engineering. Day 2 of our International Women in Engineering Day special features Geological Engineer Emily Rowe. Emily has consulting experience in the design and geotechnical monitoring of open pit mines and tailings storage facilities as well as a keen interest in rock mechanics, mining and energy projects. We asked Emily about people who inspired her into her career in applied earth sciences.... Their devotion to building better communities was contagious. A senior landscape architect noticed my interest in a storm water management project, and set some time aside to explain the design to me. BGC flood debris expert helps bring a new understanding of needs for the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project. Recently the Global Tailings Review launched a new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. This is an important milestone in our industry, and in our work at BGC. We are very pleased that BGC’s Dr. Angela Kupper, was asked to serve on the Expert Panel. The panel included six other panelists representing not just geotechnical engineering, but also leading experts in the sociological, community, environmental, and legal fields. The Panel was led by Dr. Bruno Oberle, a... former secretary of state for Switzerland. The role of the Expert Panel was to evaluate the current state of practice, best practices in tailings management, regulatory environment in various jurisdictions and lessons learned in the mining industry. The result was a robust review and an integrated standard, that includes social, environmental, managerial and technical considerations. Said Dr. Kupper At BGC we have an important role going forward in leading the implementation of this Standard. We have the expertise, experience, and leadership skills to implement the Standard for our clients, our projects, and our partners. We are proud to have received a grant from the BC Oil and Gas Research and Innovation Society (BC OGRIS) to develop a landslide susceptibility map showing where landslides are likely to be present in the BC Portion of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. This product will build on existing and new landslide inventory mapping conducted by BGC and others to create a model to support asset owners in this region to plan and prepare to manage landslide hazards. The final prod...ucts of this study will be shared by the BC Oil and Gas Commission (BCOGC), on behalf of BC OGRIS, to ensure that baseline landslide hazard data is available to support decision making for operations in the region. I went into civil engineering thinking that geotechnical engineering might be my focus but I didn’t realize until my first few classes how interesting and broad this field is - dams, foundations, tailings, pipelines. Growing up (I’m from Alaska), I heard a lot about permafrost; the combination of soil, water and temperature is wonderfully complex and fascinated me so much I made it my specialty. I love the combination of science and judgment that is required in this field. ...Heather Brooks is a geotechnical and arctic engineer with BGC. Originally, I wanted to be a structural engineer and happened to stumble into geotechnical engineering. What ultimately drew me to geotechnical engineering was that it is part-science and part-art. You can try to quantify the material behaviour but it varies and is complex, and requires life-long learning to master. Congratulations to BGCer Bradley Forbes who had his paper published in the International Journal of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering alongside co-authors Nicholas Vlachopoulos of the RMC Canada CMR and Jeffrey Oke of Queen's University. The research is focused specifically on spile and forepole support elements; two subcategories of an umbrella arch system. Within this context, an experimental application of distributed optical sensing used to monitor the strain profile along such elements is presented.

This study identifies the hydrologic function of forested uplands and peatlands in the Boreal Plains region of Canada and demonstrates that during a mesic year most peatlands are, in fact, potential sources of groundwater to adjacent forestlands.
