We can’t stress enough the importance of feeding by weight, not by volume. Your scoop could weigh very differently from feed to feed due to the difference in ...ingredients and texture of the feed. Pelleted feeds tend to be more dense therefore 1 scoop of your pelleted feed will be heavier than 1 scoop of a sweet feed, for example. Feeding recommendations from nutritionists will be in lbs (or kg). Here is a chart demonstrating how many cups for 1 lb of all our different feeds. At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. Some straight talk about riding bareback--- 99% of riding well is about creating one creature out of two, the prime example of which is the mythical Centaur. Li...ttle kids who were able to just climb onto their ponies bareback and go play and ride developed a feel and a balance and a sense of security that almost nothing else can replicate. Yes, you can fall off, and yes, you can get hurt, and yes, we now live in a highly litigious society where coaches and barn owners don't dare take the risk of letting kids do this. But, if you can do it, do do it. It will give you gifts and skills that will last a lifetime of riding, and there is not much else that a rider can do to become as close, literally, to the living, breathing, moving horse.
