When thinking about the Church, it’s remarkable to realize that it is a relatively new institution from God. For most of mankind’s history, we were waiting for the revealing of the Messiah. Over the Church’s now 2000 years of history there has, of course, been plenty of time for its theology to grow and progress. Some branches of the Church have taken cultural customs from the New Testament and imposed them as rules and laws. . . 1 Corinthians 11 is an example of this. But w...e were never meant to take our freedom from the Mosaic Law and create new physical laws for ourselves. The ideas that are behind the Apostle Paul’s customs of head coverings are clearly from God. But this does not mean the custom itself will look the same in every culture. To impose this is to impose a type of new law. The LORD speaks to us through His Word here, and He expects us to personally decide how we apply them. Paul presents this specific issue in the city of Corinth, a very troubled and secular city. See more
