From Michael Seth Fire Chief of CBRM Fire Services: Good evening everyone, As we all continue to move into what will ultimately become our new normal, I... would like to say thank you to each and everyone of you for the selfless service that you commit to provide. I am always so moved by the work everyone does in the face of adversity, and in this case significant, unknown diversities with COVID-19. I am planning on drafting a basic situational update that I can provide to everyone through email that will be sent out on Thursdays. This report will highlight our position within CBRM as it pertains to fire services, emergency management and provincial/federal updates as best as possible. A couple items that I wish to remind all: 1. EHS has changed all MFR to MVCs and difficult extrication, or upon request from responding paramedics. 2. Department of Natural Resources has issued a fire ban. I want to further reinforce this from CBRM. We need to limit the unnecessary responses and interaction of our personnel. Please spread the message of no open air burning. I have touched base with CBRM police services regarding enforcement and this discussion continues. I am hoping to have something prepared for public release in the coming days that will outline this burn ban and the consequences. 3. As we continue to take care of our communities, please remember to reach out in some manner to each other to do a check up. This situation is a stressful situation that we all have our trepidation about how we respond and what could happen. Remind each other that they have someone they can reach out to. If any of you need to chat, please let me know, I can come visit in a socially acceptable distance. Be safe. We will get through this #TogetherApart. Michael Seth, BAppBus:ES FIRE CHIEF/DIRECTOR OF FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES

The word just came down from Michael Seth, head of CBRM Fire Services. A strong recommendation to close the Fire Halls to public gatherings. Here in Big Pond we... will comply! So for unknown period of time the Big Pond Community Fire Hall is closed to public events. Thanks Paul MacLellan, Big Pond VFD Fire Chief From: Micheal Seth: Following the press conference with the Premier McNeil and Dr. Strang and their confirmation of three presumptive cases of COVID-19 within the province we will now begin the following additional precautionary measures: Fire stations in Sydney (and fire department staff at Grand Lake Road) will be closed to the public effective immediately. This will be until further direction provided. It is strongly recommended the same actions be taken in all volunteer fire departments. Any personnel that have recently returned from international travel must take their 14-day self isolation and follow the public health direction through 811 should they be showing any symptoms. This is directives from Dr. Strang from the press conference today. This shall apply to all volunteers accordingly, and ensured/enforced by Chief Officers. All Fire Prevention activities should be limited at this time and evaluated on a case-by-case basis collectively between FPO’s and Chief Officers to limit exposure. MFR will be evaluated based on information received from EHS in the coming days, as it is my understanding that they are screening calls for COVID-19 prior to notification of the fire departments at this time. Attached is the email forwarded from the communications staff from Mayor Clarke’s office that outlines specific recommendations from the press conference held this afternoon. There are also information packets from both the province and federal public health officials. We want to take all necessary precautions to protect the fire services personnel during this pandemic. Follow the directions from public health should you be symptomatic or have recently travelled out of the country. Chiefs: if you could please reply to this email and copy Marian to advise if you are adopting these precautions or anything additional that you may be putting in place, would be greatly appreciated. Platoon Chiefs/Deputy Chiefs: Please reply that you have read and understood this back to me and Marian. Michael Seth, BAppBus:ES Fire Chief/Director of Fire & Emergency Services Cape Breton Regional Municipality
