Big City, Little Homestead's Rewilding 22.01.2021

Oh, hai, long-forgotten blog, and my patient or happenstantial blog reader! I have not died. While I may have disappeared, I haven't gotten sick and/or completely wasted away. I simply took a solid year off, using COVID as a flimsy excuse while the rest of the world rediscovered the joys of gardening and baking bread. These were things that I was already doing, sometimes well, sometimes badly.... https://bigcitylittlehomestead.ca/gard/milkweed-seed-offer/

Today, at long last, I finally bird-proofed my big bay window with Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers. Soon I’ll be stocking a feeder beside it, where the purple plant hangs. Haven’t had a fatal bird strike yet that I know of, but wanted to make sure it never happens, and to show the neighbourhood something they might want to do. I was rewarded by making a new ladybug friend.

There is a company in Montreal that makes bird-friendly glass for new and retrofitted windows! If you know any architects, construction companies, or building maintenance specialists, please pass this information on. http://www.walkerglass.com/fr

If you're into #nativeplants, the North American Native Plant Society is having the #NANPSgardencontest2020. Take a video, post it to social media, or submit it until October 9. More info here: https://nanps.us4.list-manage.com/track/click (I would participate myself, but I'm in the middle of a front yard renovation!)

People in glass houses not only should not throw stones. They should fix their choices by retrofitting or replacing the glass so that the birds can actually see and avoid it. Not to mention, also make sure it's triple-glazed so that it's energy-efficient, but as that obviously saves money and is regulatory, is guaranteed to take place sooner if not already.
