CLACK CLACK CLACK.... That annoying sound your V8 engine makes in the mornings or during cold starts. Most of time it's broken manifold bolts/studs, but in this case the entire manifold was cracked creating a constant noise and unwanted exhaust gas odour entering the cabin.... The bolts/studs break from a differential in their expansion rates when heated. The manifold will typically expand faster than the hardware causing the head of the bolt/stud to break off causing a small exhaust leak, which over time will become more and more present; eventually warping the manifold(which we reccomend when performing stud/bolt removal). The manifold will expand faster as it is a cast iron part whereas the hardware has been heat treated. We only use OEM updated hardware when performing this repair. Yikes. We caught this timing belt in the knick of time. If this belt were to have broke this customer would have most likely had to replace his engine, being that this 3.5L Honda engine found in many of their vehicles such as the Oddysey, Ridgeline and Accord. This particular engine is an interference engine meaning that the if the timing belt breaks the likelihood of the intake and exhaust valves contacting the piston is quite high. ... When the valves contact the piston(s) it bends the valves creating a situation where the valve no longer seals and creates a low compression condition. Low compression means the cylinders cannot operate correctly. Some timing belts are easy to check, some may take 30 minutes to inspect. At any rate it is never a bad idea the add an inspection of your timing belt as regular maintenance, and they should be replaced every 80-100 000km to ensure this doesn't happen to you. Coolant leaks. Some are easy to fix, some are a bit more in-depth much like this 1991 Acura Legend V6 3.2L. This client had a concern of a coolant leak, it has been a constant battle for him to keep up with topping up coolant. We inspected the engine and pressured up the cooling system with our cooling system pressure testers to reduce diagnostic time and to pinpoint the exact location. Though this leak was behind the timing cover we were 99% sure it was a failed water pump..., which is timing belt driven. We quoted out the required work, which was performed and we cleaned up all the coolant mess to make it look brand new behind the timing cover again (forgot to snap a picture). Not that it will be seen by the customer but it's one little step we take to prevent the new timing belt from being contaminated with coolant, oil or sludge. We installed a complete component kit including a new timing belt, water pump, tensioner and related components for added peace of mind.
