Within the last month or so, I have received the joyful news that 2 of my favourite recent clients received job offers and are starting fabulous new jobs. After quietly celebrating each of these successes with chair dancing in my home office and a huge smile on my face, I started to reflect on how and why they were successful in landing great new roles during this strange and complicated time we are all navigating. The short answer is: They were willing to do the hard work th...at comes with job searching & interviewing. 1. They each had a target list of organizations they were interested in working with. 2. They made sure that their resumes were current, easy-to-read and factual. 3. They customized their cover letter for each application. Making a mid-career change, this can be especially important! 4. They asked for feedback after they were interviewed and then worked on improving their interviewing skills. It sounds simple, I know. I also know just how hard it is to be in the middle of a job search (in a pandemic!) and to feel the frustration of not being selected for roles you really want. I love the idea of calling out a sense of humour as a "superpower"! Especially during these difficult times for both individuals and organizations, the appropriate use of humour can be useful in helping build relationships virtually, overcoming challenges and generally ensuring there is some levity and laughter in our everyday interactions!
