Image reposted from @domesticworkers Our thoughts below: Our hearts go out to everyone grieving the events from yesterday. This incident may have happened south of the border but the continued rise of hate crimes against Asian people is a very local problem: Vancouver reported a 717% increase in 2020 compared to 2019.... White supremacy, patriarchy, and misogyny are so pervasive in our society but there are a lot of individuals and organizations on the front lines advocating for racial and social justice, as well as providing support to communities: @swan_vancouver @theasncanadian @angryasianfeminist @kimsaira @annie_wu_22 @aapiwomenlead @stopaapihate @asianamericancollective @asians4antiracism @aafc.nyc @butterflycsw @napawf @advancingjustice_aajc @cpacsorg @redcanarysong @kiwa4justice @cyclista_zine @asian_hate_is_inhumane @wishdropin @yarrowsociety Please continue to support and uplift Asian folks, and take care of each other

Our Community Bikes has been refurbishing bikes, recycling parts and teaching mechanics since 1993! Back in 1999 a little ol' shop know as The Bike Kitchen was founded with their help and guidance. Over the years staff and volunteers at OCB have helped many of us out of a mechanical jam, and provided a space to learn new skills and make new friends. Currently OCB is in need of support to weather the changes that COVID-19 has brought. They are aiming to raise $10,000 by the end of April. They've made a significant dent but still have a ways to go. If you're able to pitch in, follow the link below to donate. If you've got a bike lying around they would be happy to accept it. OCB is also open this week for service by appointment Tue - Sat 11am - 6pm. You can get in touch through their website <3 http://pedalpower.org/get-involved/#donate
A neat back idea as a back up for elastics, use a bike tube! This mask was home made by folks at the Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange. Make your own face covering to protect others when you have to go out. Some instructions here: https://www.cdc.gov//prevent/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html
As we all learn to giving each other a little more space we also need to adjust the environments we move through. In many places this means more space for pedestrians and cyclists!! Check out this blog post from Vancouver Public Space Network about how other cities are changing, and ideas to make Vancouver a safer city for social distancing. http://vancouverpublicspace.ca//covid-19-response-creati/
Blasting ya'll with good vibes from isolation at home. We're all wishing we could be at the BK right now. In the meantime, if you're in need of bike repair, our friends at Kickstand and OCB are offering help. Be sure to get in touch online instead of dropping by since they're closed to the public. The doc below also has a working list of shops that are open in some capacity in Vancouver. Book an appointment to have your bike fixed by a mechanic at OCB: https://www.facebook.c...om//a.55339967802/3393410564022370/ Request emergency repair if you need your bike to stay mobile. Assistance provided by sliding scale donation. Apply on Kickstand's site: https://www.eastvankickstand.org/ List of shops operating in Vancouver: https://docs.google.com//11GmtybhjJSDOZX8F_64dSjGgmqe/edit
