Bike Sudbury 26.02.2021

Why do people not cycle in the winter? Not because of the cold. Research shows you need 1) a network of safe bicycle paths - without having to share or cross path with motorized vehicles and 2) snow removal. Surprise, surprise...

Thinking of doing some fat bike riding this year? The Walden Mountain Bike Club has great fat bike trails that you can ride (for a fee). The WMBC is one of our great supporters. If you'd like to try riding on the Walden trails this winter, here are some guidelines from Rusty, the President. Good knowledge too even if you want to go out elsewhere. There's great riding in the regular season too out in Walden with lots of opportunities to learn mountain bike riding skills for t...he whole family. Kivi Park also offers fat bike riding (also for a fee). https://www.waldenmbc.ca/ (new website in progress)

The City of Greater Sudbury is planning on doing a Trails Master Plan next year. Looking forward to discussion on what this might mean to enhancing our trail systems for cycling here in Sudbury.

What we also learned about roundabouts today answers questions we've had about the Maley Drive roundabouts, and why cyclists weren't accommodated with crossrides in the roundabouts. It's currently illegal in Ontario for cyclists to do this. A cyclist must act as a pedestrian and walk their bike around the roundabout, or move into the motorized traffic lane. So until the law is changed, that's the only way to deal with our new roundabouts. For those who don't know what a crossride is, it's the same as a crosswalk, except it's for bikes. You see these along-side crosswalks in places in Sudbury. More info here: https://www.greatersudbury.ca//transpo/cycling/crossrides/ Great info at #obs2020!
