In 2018, @translink employed @pointgreysecondaryschool alum, @SethRogen, to do safety announcements for the SkyTrain and B-Line bus service. Seth got involved with the project after Morgan Freeman was dropped. Here is an example of one of Seth’s safety spots: Hey Vancouver, it’s Seth! Here’s a tip to make your transit ride even more awesome. We actually have good public transit in this city and another train will be coming shortly. So please don’t stop the automatic train doors from doing their thing. It can cause delays and make you look like a real jerk.
Opened in 1985, just ahead of Expo 86, the Skytrain's initial track was mostly above ground-hence the name. The train line ended in New Westminster and ran along a similar route to Vancouver's first 'mass' transit system: the Interurban. The SkyTrain system was expanded in 1994 and then again in 2006 with the new Millennium Line. In 2009, TransLink opened the Canada line for the 2010 Olympics. In 2017 the most recent addition was completed, with an extension to Port Moody. Unlike other city's mass transit systems, there are no drivers on the SkyTrain. The entire system is managed at a central control center, with over 670 employees watching over a 1,000 camera feeds. The trains retain a cone of safety through a rolling block system that prevents the trains from ever colliding.
Not your average block tower.
The Danish architect aims to create a balance between the playful and practical. He refers to his work as ‘world craft’, the process of turning surreal designs into habitable spaces. Other projects include The Mountain, a parking structure resurfaced to be a cascading mountain of green space and Copenhill, a power plant with only steam as waste and a fully functional rooftop ski hill. Ideas have to spring from somewhere and @minecraft is the perfect sandbox to envision the next BIG thing. . . #VancouverHouse #VanCity #bjarkeingels #BIG #Minecraft
Artwork by @cheechoo98 . . Ed Chee has done a series of pieces focusing on three amazing Canadian health leaders. Check out his art and share the love.
The @fluevog company noticed that Dr. Bonnie Henry was wearing their footwear to a number of the daily press conferences during the CoVid-19 pandemic. Inspired by her ability to present information in an accessible manner, her calm demeanour and her subtle sense of style, John Fluevog crated a limited edition shoe. All profits from the sales will be donated to the Vancouver Food Bank. The shoe was so popular and the love for our PHO so wide, that the company’s website crashed during the first minutes of presale. Printed inside the shoe are her words that have steered us all forward during these difficult times: Be Kind. Be Calm. Be Safe. . . Thank you Dr. Henry for your compassion, your composure and your leadership.
The Expo Centre’s geodesic dome was voted the most iconic building in Vancouver in a online poll hosted by CBC last September. The building is home to Vancouver’s first Omnimax theatre and Science World. Designed by Bruno Freschi, the dome is made of 766 aluminum triangles. The dome is just one of a handful of iconic pieces of infrastructure, built for Expo, that are still being used today. Other sites include the Roundhouse Community Centre, Dr. Sun-Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden and the Expo SkyTrain Line. All of these features are stops on our afternoon Dragons & Steam bike tour. On the other side of the city, Canada Place still stands, another feature from the 86 party. Gone, but not forgotten, is the famous McBarge. The floating McDonalds was last seen cruising up the Burrard Inlet. #Expo86 #Vancouver #ScienceWorld
In 1986, Vancouver hosted the party-of-all-parties. It lasted nearly six months, with 54 countries building formal pavilions along a 173 acre site on False Creek. The original plan was for a modest $78 million event to celebrate Vancouver’s 100th birthday. But things got a little out of control; the final expense report came in at $802 million. The theme for Expo 86 was transportation and communication. And although there were many opportunities for education and learning, th...e organizers seemed to understand that the one thing every decent party needs is beer. Beer gardens lined the fair grounds, with some of the largest circling the Plaza of Nations. With the gorgeous coastal mountains in the background, a dizzying amount of spectacle in the foreground and just enough beer to make a monorail seem fun, Vancouver became a destination city overnight. Bud Luxford said it best: We invited the world and they didn’t go home. Favourite Memories: Expo Ernie, the red coaster, Rainbow Wars What are yours? #Expo86 #Vancouver #VanCity
The Southsiders theme song is sung to the tune of Country Roads: Boundary Road take me home To the place where I belong Vancouver, pretty mama... Take me home, Boundary Road. (Swangard Stadium was positioned just east of Boundary Road) Photo by Duncan Nichol
The Southsiders have been cheering on the Vancouver Whitecaps since 1999. The group formed when the team, known then as the Vancouver 86ers, was playing their matches in Swangard Stadium. The supporters would congregate at the south end beer garden. This position put them in heckling distance of the away goaltender during the second half of play. Currently, the Vancouver Southsiders have over 700 paying members. All members attending matches at BC Place, stand and sing for the entirety of the game. @whitecapsfc @bcplacestadium #Vancouver #Soccer #FootballClub #Whitecaps #VanCity #BlueAndWhite #Southsiders
