To continue our celebration of the Resurgence: Indigequeer Identities exhibition, our next artist is... Sierra Tasi Baker (she/them)Kwakwala name: Gesuqwaluck (Creator/Creative One)Mediums: Urban Design, Public Art, Performance Art, Dance/Choreography and Creative Directing, Swxwú7mesh Úxwumixw, xmkym, Kwakwakawakw/Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw, ingít, Xaayda & Magyar from the Wolf, Eagle, Raven, Thunderbird, Lightning Snake and Turul Clans.... Chen chen stway is a Swxwú7mesh sníchim word which means to uphold and uplift each other. This principle is important to me in the work I do because this principle is what has raised and nourished me. I’m very fortunate to have grown up in an artistic, powerful, creative and spiritually open household. My parents celebrated a lot of my fluidity whilst I was growing up. Since then I’ve always been critical of these unsafe colonial spaces that are imposed on us and work to re-centre our ancestral laws and ways of being in everything I do, it’s an ongoing ever-evolving process. Catch Sgaawaay K’uuna (Edge of the Knife) (2018) tonight at 9 pm and tomorrow 12 am and 3 pm on APTN movies. Sgaawaay K'uuna (Edge of the Knife) is a feature-length Haida-language film about pride, tragedy and penance, co-directed by Gwaai Edenshaw and Helen Haig-Brown. Adiits’ii, the lead character in the film, is mentally and physically pushed to the brink of survival and becomes Gaagiixiid / Gaagiid the Haida Wildman. The Gaagiixiid is one of Haida’s most popular storie...s, sustained over the years though song and performance. With less than 1% of Haida people being fluent in their ancestral language, Sgaawaay K’uuna (Edge of the Knife) was envisioned to support the Haida language, create local employment and promote Haida culture by bringing an ancient Haida story into a new space using the medium of film. https://www.aptn.ca/movies/ Sgaawaay K’uuna (Edge of the Knife), still from the video, 2018.

Lifeways: Reimagining Community, Spirit and Place December 9, 2020 January 24, 2021 Bill Reid Gallery Hummingbird Gathering Space... We are pleased to partner on Lifeways, a film exhibition featuring the work of UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Master students. Bringing together local Haida, academics, storytellers and an international group of design students, these films are part of a process for reconciliation. The stories reflect on self, community and spirit - an epic of humanity and nature coming together under the pressures of social, environmental, economic and political unrest. It is a set of animated stories inspired by the supernatural beings found in Haida mythology. This exhibition explores the formation of identity by reimagining the community, spirit and place we know as Haida Gwaii. https://bit.ly/33Uoz9l
