I have attached a link to my remarks from the August 24th Council meeting on the Multi-Turf debate. In my letter to the editor in the Chronicle Journal August 22nd I addressed the tax implication of the project. If you were unable to see that letter hopefully my remarks will provide clarification for you on this topic. I recognize that many are concerned with what this may mean to them as homeowners/businesses in the city, depending on how this has been presented to you. Thanks for watching. I was pleased to join the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health and MP for Thunder Bay Superior North and the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure the Honourable Laurie Scott to announce that Thunder Bay Transit will be receiving $25.5 million to cover the costs of 13 infrastructure projects. The $25.5 million includes $10.4-million provided through the Federal Government’s Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, $8.5 million from the province and $6.6 million from the Cit...y of Thunder Bay. The money will be used for a variety of purposes, including the purchase of four conventional buses, 14 specialized paratransit buses, 40 new bus shelters, the creation of 23 crossovers and an electronic fare management system that will make payment easier through reloadable smart cards. A transit hub will be built in Westfort and upgrades will be made to other transit hubs. The 13 projects that are being funded will improve the quality, safety and convenience of the city’s transit system thereby improving the overall experience for the rider. The funding will also diminish the impact that the projects will have on the City tax base. I want to thank Minister’s Hajdu and Scott and their respective governments for their contributions to these very important projects which will strengthen our community.

The following is a letter to the Chronicle Journal that was published this past Saturday. Hopefully it will help you with regard to the implication of this decision on your tax bill. Thanks for reading. On Aug. 10, Thunder Bay city council passed a motion 9-4, still to be ratified on Aug. 24, endorsing the financing and tendering of a multi-use indoor turf facility, supported by administrative work showing a break-even or small surplus position on the annual operating budget...Continue reading
