Come and enjoy a "well-made object" and more in "To Speak With A Golden Voice" exhibition. Bill Reid, Wooden Dish, c.1959, cedar Courtesy of the Museum of Anthropology, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada 3259/15. Collection of Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess... Bill Reid was both fascinated and inspired by traditional Haida carvings. While living in Toronto in the 1940s, Bill Reid was deeply impressed by the exceptionally large pole from his grandmother's village of T'aanuu, on display at the Royal Ontario Museum. He began to study Indigenous museum collections and copy the work of Haida and Northwest Coast carvers. . . . #ToSpeakwithaGoldenVoice #BillReid #BillReidGallery #GwaaiEdenshaw #supportmuseums #Haida #downtown #Vancouver #respect #billreid #billreid100 #billreidgallery #indigenous #mentor #luminary #aboriginal #NWC #beSafe #beKind #beCalm #LoveVancouver #enjoyartwhileapart #exploreBC #LoveVancouver #TourismVancouver #supportLocal #localmuseums #indigenoustourism

The 30th Annual Women's Memorial March - Their Spirits Live Within Us - In Honour of MMIWG2S+ (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People). Sunday, February 14th, family and community members will gather at 10:30 am at Hastings and Main Streets where family members speak in remembrance. March begins at 12 noon (Main & Hastings) with stops to commemorate where women were last seen or found. All COVID-19 protocols are in effectsocial distancing and mas...ks are required. The Women's Memorial March continues to express compassion, community, and caring for all women in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, Unceded Coast Salish Territories. This event will also be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube. Indigenous women disproportionately continue to go missing or be murdered with minimal to no action to address these tragedies or the systemic nature of gendered violence, poverty, racism, or colonialism. This event is organized and led by women in the Downtown Eastside because women especially Indigenous women face physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual violence on a daily basis. The Women’s Memorial March is an opportunity to come together to grieve the loss of our beloved sisters, remember the women who are still missing, and dedicate ourselves to justice. We are heartbroken to have heard the passing of Taran Kootenhayoo. We send our deepest condolences to Taran's family and friends during this time of reflection and healing. We were very privileged to have worked, laughed and shared stories with Taran as a part of our 2019 Wintergathering and What We Bring with Us exhibition last year as well as receptions at the Gallery. His delightful smile, charm and wit will be greatly missed. Thank you for the memories, RIP @aweheck_

Levi Nelson, Gender Performativity, 2020 Acrylic on canvas The term gender performativity comes from Judith Butler's book "Gender Trouble" (1990), where they argue that being born male or female does not determine a person's behaviour. Instead, people learn to behave in certain ways to fit into society. The idea of gender is an act or performance. The way we choose to talk, walk, dress, is what Butler calls "gender performativity." What society regards as a person's gender is... just a performance made to please social expectations and not a true expression of the person's "gender identity." I'm interested in the intersection between 2Spirit identities which views gender as a spiritual component or what Butler might call a "true gender identity," and where this meets the act of performing our feminine or masculine roles to one another. Come and see more amazing works by 2Spirit artists: Levi Nelson (Lil’wat First Nation), Jaz Whitford (Secwepemc), Morgan Whitehead (Plains Cree) and Raven John (Coast Salish/Sto:lo) in Resurgence: Indigequeer Identities. . . . #2Spirit #Resurgence #Indigequeer #Indigiqueer #Identities #queer #LeviNelson #LilwatFirstNation #JazWhitford #Secwepemc #MorganWhitehead #PlainsCree #RavenJohn #CoastSalish #Sto:lo #existence #resistance #resilience #Haida #BillReid100 #BillReidGallery #billreidgallery #billreid #vancouver #Indigenous #northwestcoastart #MuseumfromHome #NWC #FirstNations #indigenoustourism
A rare sight @billreidgallery... the miniature and the monumental - you can see the gold Mythic Messengers bracelet and turnaround to see the sublime bronze Mythic Messengers sculpture! "I have lived intimately with the strange and beautiful beasts and heroes of Haida mythology and learned to know them as part of myself..." - Bill Reid, 1967 Bill Reid was one of the first Northwest Coast artists to create monumental works in bronze. ... Mythic Messengers was inspired by Haida argillite panel pipes and intertwined five of Bill Reid's favourite Haida stories: Bear Family, a human woman married to the Bear Prince, and their twin cubs Nanasimgit, his wife, and her Killer Whale abductor Sea Wolf (Wasgo) who eats three killer whales per day Dogfish Woman, a powerful ancestress, next to the supernatural dogfish Eagle Prince, with a human figure emerging from his beak The elongated tongues represent communication, transformation, and how stories are connected to one another. Bill Reid described these connections as just like "an old fashioned telephone switchboard." He believed that stories of the past "can still speak to us across time, space, and enormous cultural differences." Mythic Messengers is 8.5 meters / 26 feet long and weighs 1500 kg or 3800 lbs.. It was originally commissioned in 1984 by Teleglobe Canada for their Burnaby headquarters. It was cast at the Harman Sculpture Foundry in Vancouver, British Columbia. This modernist set of light fixtures is a direct precursor to Bill Reid's iconic Milky Way Necklace. They were originally commissioned to hang in the Union Club of British Columbia, Victoria. When the club was later renovated, the lights made their way back to Bill. Martine Reid recently commissioned George Rammell to reconstruct and mount the lights. Bill Reid, Reconstructed by George Rammell, Light Recovered, c.1960, brass, lights, cedar. Bill Reid, Milky Way Necklace,... 22k yellow gold, 18k yellow gold, white gold, diamonds, 1969, 40 cm length, 17 cm diameter, Bill and Martine Reid Founding Collection, SFU Bill Reid Collection, 2002.1.91a-b There are 118 diamonds in the necklace. The necklace is shaped in two layers, with the lower layer constructed of three dimensional pyramid shapes that are hinged and articulated and the upper layer composed of a wire forming angular shapes. A brooch is hidden within the necklace that can be detached and worn separately (2002.1.91b). The clasp on the necklace is opened by pushing on one of the diamonds. . . . #milkyway #necklace #EnjoyArtWhileApart #lightreconstructed #lightfixtures #diamonds #brooch #VancouverComeBack #TourismVancouver #supportLocal #LocalMuseums #exploreBC #Haida #HaidaGwaii #respect #charlesedenshaw #sculpture #billreid #billreid100 #billreidgallery #indigenous #canadianicon #mentor #luminary #aboriginal #NWC
