Binbrook Conservation Area 24.02.2021

Ice-fishing season is finally here! No one loves freezing weather more than us, as we are able to welcome anglers, families, and youth to Binbrook Conservation Area. Please note that ice-fishing is completely dependent on safe ice measurements and we are only open when there is a minimum of 6 inches. As this can change daily, we encourage you to check social media regularly for updates on closures, or call the site before making the trip. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p....m. daily. Day use rates will apply. All provincial fishing regulations and catch and release policy are in effect. Live-bait is permitted as long as it is locally sourced. Ice hut rentals are not available, but visitors may bring their own portable ice huts and be prepared to pull them in to the lake as no motorized vehicles are permitted on the ice. A friendly reminder that the Annual Hard Water Derby will not be taking place this season.

Morgan’s Point Conservation Area offers a unique setting of old growth forest and remnants of the oak savannah prairie that once covered large areas of the Niagara Peninsula. Here you can experience the dunes and the majestic ‘old growth’ Sugar Maple, Black Walnut and Hop Hornbeam trees as you walk the boardwalk and trails, or view the lake waterfowl and monarch butterflies as they stop to rest and refuel before crossing the lake during their migration. Today's Spotlight Saturday features photos sent to us by Donna Cridland from the Township of Wainfleet, who is also on the NPCA Board of Directors!

Outdoor recreation is important to our health, and our pet’s health. NPCA conservation areas remain available for passive recreation like walking and hiking. We do wish to remind visitors that if you are bringing your pet to a Conservation Area, it must remain on a leash at all times, for the safety of the pet and other visitors. Owners must pick up and properly dispose of their pet’s waste. Garbage cans are provided at the entrance/parking area of each Conservation Area.... Please be respectful of nature and other visitors, keep your pet on leash and pick up after them please!

There's still time to enroll your little ones in Ball's Falls Nature School. While at Nature School, students will continue to build their literacy, numeracy, inquiry and social skills, where learning is based on environmental, sustainable, and conservation principles. Their afternoons are spent exploring the trails, scenes and forests of Ball's Falls Conservation Area, and engaging in child-led, inquiry-based learning within the new Forest Playscape a safe place for students to play, learn, socialize and be creative within the Carolinian Forest. Learn more and register at npca.ca/learning/day-camps.

Provincial changes to the Conservation Authorities Act will impact the NPCA's watershed management approach and progress made on Auditor General recommendations. The NPCA remains hopeful that through a collaborative approach, conservation authorities will be able to work with the Ministry to address concerns regarding potential limitations in the protection, restoration, and enhancement of local watersheds. Read more on the proposed changes and the NPCA's recommendations to the Province below.

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year in the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere (NEB): nature hikes and trees in warm hues that paint a majestic backdrop from Niagara to Tobermory. This year, this colourful season has looked and felt like none we’ve ever experienced.
