Things you want to avoid on ingredient labels: Natural Flavors: You may think that because these unspecific flavors are called natural that they’re better for you than artificial flavors, but that would be wrong. Unfortunately, natural flavors are still created in a lab, the exact ingredients of which are undisclosed (red flag!) and often include things like MSG, animal products and allergens, like soy and gluten.... Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA): ( try pronouncing that name . This preservative is used to help foods retain color, but it also irritates the skin, causes skin rashes and even asthma. It is on the FDA’s toxicity watchlist, which you know can’t be a good sign (especially considering how many other toxins they let slide). Soybean Oil: Soybean oil is an unhealthy oil that fits into the category of trans fats, partially-hydrogenated oils and other unhealthy oils, like canola, and vegetable blends. They cause serious inflammation, significant lowering of HDL (good) cholesterol and a rise in LDL (bad) cholesterol, clogging our arteries. These oils also cause insulin resistance and/or contribute to type 2 diabetes, among other health problems. Polysorbate (20 or 80): The material safety data sheet tells us that this emulsifier is slightly hazardous in case of skin contact,of ingestion, and of inhalation. It may cause adverse reproductive effects based on animal test data (no human data found ).. it may cause cancer based on animal test data (again no human data found ).. and it may affect genetic material (mutagenic). You can find this in food, personal care products, toothpastes and in breathing treatment formulations prescribed by a lot of pediatricians . When shopping in the store here are my tips: Buy organic Shop the perimeter Limit the amount of processed food Always read the ingredient label for the above ingredients. As always, a reminder of why this is so important... your health is drastically affected by what you eat. So whatever you’re feeding your body make sure it’s good for you!
