The Research Scientist will provide guidance, consultation and oversight related to the operation of magnetic resonance (NMR) instruments and protein preparation/purification in the London Regional Proteomics Centre (LRPC). The Research Scientist will facilitate research by providing guidance on research and experimental design and related equipment, as well as best approaches for project development, implementation, and evaluation. The Research Scientist will also oversee research operations within the Biomolecular NMR Facility, foster research collaborations, provide guidance and training of new users (local and regional), and solve research problems or issues that arise.... https://biophysicalsociety.ca//university-of-western-onta/

Congratulations to Dr. David Sivak on having been chosen by the Biophysical Society of Canada to be the recipient of the 2021 Young Investigator Award. He was selected in recognition of his cutting edge, transformative and interdisciplinary research in the field of nonequilibrium statistical biophysics. Dr. Sivak’s recent work touches on the way fluctuation-dominated biomolecular machines operate and how they can achieve efficient energy transduction These fundamentally noneq...uilibrium questions are of course extremely complex and require novel ways of thinking and novel theoretical tools which is exactly where Dr. Sivak’s work comes in. Compared to that of many in the field, his work stands out because it is strongly focused on bridging the gap between theory and experiments, by guiding the design of experiments to explore or manipulate molecular systems. His work opens a way to a full understanding of the inner working of molecular machines, and might also bring answers to fundamental questions about the evolutionary optimization of biomolecule structure and function. Perhaps most exciting of all, it might provide guidance for the design of new bio-inspired synthetic machines https://biophysicalsociety.ca//bsc-announces-david-sivak-/

It is with great pleasure and on behalf on all BSC executives and BSC community I congratulate Professor John Baenziger with the 2020 Michelle Auger BSC Service Award. With this Award we celebrate and acknowledge his leadership as the BSC President from 2014 till 2019, when the society grew from a mere 30 people to over 300 members in 5 years. During his hard work as a president John put together outstanding executive committee and under his leadership we witnessed tremendous... growth of the activities within the society, such as: national meetings and international events were organised, various awards for trainees and researchers were established and sponsorships from commercial companies were acquired. New student activities have been promoted, which have resulted in the growth of a young and talented community of biophysics researchers in Canada. With this Award we thank John for his enormous dedication and outstanding contributions to the rise and growth of the BSC. Zoya Leonenko BSC President

Given the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation and the resulting health and travel advisories, the Executive Committee of the Biophysical Society of Canada and BSC 2020 Organizing Committee made a decision to cancel the 6th Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society of Canada (BSC 2020), which was to be held in Halifax NS this May, and to re-schedule the meeting to the spring of 2021, to be held in Halifax, NS. We will reimburse registration fees to all our participants within the coming weeks. Contacting the BSC is not necessary for reimbursement to happen.

Congratulations to Dr. John Rubinstein on being named the 2020 BSC National Lecturer. John Rubinstein obtained his B.Sc from the University of Guelph in 1998. He received his PhD from Cambridge University (2002) where he worked in Medical Research Council laboratories under the supervision of Sir John E. Walker and Dr. Richard Henderson. Dr. Rubinstein was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology before returning to Canada for a National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) postdoctoral fellowship at the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research. The Biophysical Society of Canada is attributing its 2020 Young Investigator Award to Dr. Sabrina Leslie, for her outstanding contributions in the field of single-molecule biophysics. Dr. Leslie has pioneered and perfected a new type of molecular imaging modality named CLiC, for Convex Lens-Induced Confinement. Through the gentle entrapment of molecules into very small wells it enables the background-free observation of large numbers of individual molecules in natural conditions, over very long periods of time. We are looking for talented young scientists (postdoctoral researchers and/or PhD students) to join our Biomolecular Simulation team in Helsinki. The projects will be based on HFSP (Human Frontier Science Project) funding that was granted to reveal effects of diet-induced changes in brain lipid composition on activation and function of membrane proteins in the brain. We carry out atomistic and multi-scale simulations that will be linked to experiments (lipidomics, membrane biophysics, cell biology, biochemistry, neuroscience) done by our partners in the same HFSP project.
