Continuing our series on Mold, this week we take a look at Aspergillus niger. Aspergillus niger is a fungus, a type of mold that is black.It has been associated with some cases of pneumonia and also spoilage of certain foods. It is by far the most common Aspergillus species responsible for post-harvest decay of fresh fruit, including grapes, apples, pears, peaches, citrus, strawberries and black mold rot of onions. Some strains of Aspergillus niger are known to produce toxic ...compounds (mycotoxins) called ochratoxins. Ochratoxins are toxic to the kidney and can give rise to renal tumours in a variety of animal species. Ochratoxins are also potentially hazardous to human health through their consumption. Aspergillus niger is common in both residential and urban areas, and is present in both indoor and outdoor air samples. It can be found growing on damp organic building materials and in contaminated ventilation systems.
