Wherever leaves fall, they decompose and restock the soil with nutrients and organic When they go directly into lakes and rivers the nutrients will feed unwant...ed algae growth next summer. In addition to a major "ick" factor, this algae is a problem because when it dies and decomposes at the bottom of the lake, it uses up oxygen that fish and native plants need. Please do not put leaves into the lake! If you must remove your leaves, the best place for them is in the woods where they can return their energy to the soil. Not only is it harmful to the lake and our water quality, dumping your leaves so that they float past or into a neighbour’s property is disrespectful. Leave your leaves on land!
KLT is pleased to announce that John and Susan McWilliams are donating a property to Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) as a part of the Christie Bentham Wetland project...! The McWilliams Property is a 32-acre property located in the Stony Lake area, just south of Burleigh Falls and adjacent to the Christie Bentham Wetland project. With the addition of this property, the Christie Bentham Wetland is 170 acres of significant, protected land! Our natural landscape is disappearing too fast; we want to help conserve and protect the land and enable others to enjoy it. John and Susan shared about why they chose to donate this property to KLT. I just checked our cupboard and have a 200g bag of Original Recipe chips, bought locally, that is on the recall list. Follow link in the story to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency notice for more information.

DYK? Egg parasites may help with gypsy moth control. Our forest health monitoring crews are finding high numbers of parasitized egg masses in southwestern Ontar...io. These parasites attack only gypsy moth eggs and become more abundant when gypsy moth numbers are high. The parasites should help to reduce next year’s infestation levels where they occur. Parasitized egg masses are light coloured and riddled with holes. Healthy egg masses are tan coloured and firm. You can help by removing any fresh egg masses within reach. Each destroyed egg mass represents thousands fewer caterpillars next year.
