We caught up to this Western Kingbird at Codroy Valley , another rarity for that area and a nice addition to their growing checklist list! Western Kingbirds breed in southern parts of western Canada but mostly in the western half of the US. We watched this one sally out to catch insects from a number of different perches - including the utility line as seen in the photo - and we were absolutely delighted to watch this activity happen only a few feet above us . Known as a "Bullbird" in Newfoundland, the Dovekie is best seen from shore during the winter season . Our experience with the one in the video happened at Stephenville on October 20th, which is a little early. With fall migration winding down , the Dovekie is a reminder of the changing seasons and the return of our winter birds . Birding by Season #birdingbyseason #explorenl #ExploreTNL ... Meet Janice, the Founder of #BirdingbySeason! Janice is a First Nations conservation biologist and experienced birder, and that’s what makes Birding by Season so unique! Janice incorporates an Indigenous perspective with birding by ear skills to create a unique and rich interpretative birding experience. Here are some fun facts about your host and local guide: Janice grew up in Stephenville on Newfoundland’s southwest coast, where she discovered an interest in birds at an ...early age. Her strong connection to nature led her to change careers and while pursuing studies in conservation biology at Acadia University, she uncovered her Mi’kmaq heritage. If Janice had to pick a favourite bird, it would be the Piping Plover or the Boreal Chickadee. Today we celebrate World Wetlands Day and the Grand Codroy Estuary, our Province's only RAMSAR wetland of international importance. It's also recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area. The Estuary provides a safe haven for a variety of species including this Tundra Swan, a very rare (and lingering) visitor that wandered off course late last fall. #WorldWetlandsDay #ramsar Nature Conservancy of Canada / Conservation de la nature Canada
