When I started photographing births, it was mainly to capture the emotion I was so lucky enough to witness often. In my head I always thought if I could just share this moment with more people, or if more people just see this moment maybe, just maybe they would see the beauty and magic in births, and then maybe, quite possibly not rush into a medicalized birth many of us have been conditioned to believe is the only way to have our babies. - Then more recently I have notice...d that In my culture the erasure of traditional birth teachings is prolific. And even in my own work I find that there is a huge gap in representation in births. When I see unmedicated, homebirth, waterbirth, or vaginal births depicted, often times I struggle to identify with those in the picture. - So I share this image in hopes that people that look like me, like us, can see themselves within these powerful moments. That we too have a choice. That our bodies are strong enough and most importantly that we can do it too! - Shoot me a message if you wanna chat further about culturally affirming, inclusive, full spectrum support. - #ibpocbirthworker #yvrbirthworker #fullspectrumsupoort #communitycare #birthkeeper #birth360families #vaginalbirth #unmedicatedbirth #caughtmybaby #representationmatters #diversity #inclusion See more

It’s almost a wrap for 2020, despite this years challenge and it being slightly unusual, I am grateful for all the experiences that came with it as I have grown so much in my work and within myself. It’s always an honour to be a small part of your stories in helping to welcome your babies and throughout your postpartum healing time. Thank you for showing me your strength & courage and most importantly the Love I saw in each and every one of you. Happy New Year! Sending love and may this candle light your way for 2021! Can’t wait to see what’s in store. #birth360families #yvrbirthkeeper #yvrdoula #yvrbirthworker #postpartum #birth

Babies are instinctual and are born ready to find nourishment. It’s so beautiful to watch this unfold time and time again. #breastcrawl #chestcrawl #babiesinstincts #goldenhour Posted @withregram @avivaromm Did you know that babies are born with over 75 primal instincts that help them survive and thrive? Just a few examples are the rooting and gag reflexes that help baby latch to breastfeed while protecting her from choking, the startle reflex - when baby hears a loud nois...e or feels his neck unsupported - he ‘reaches out to grab on - righting, in which, if baby finds herself on her tummy, will turn her head to one side so that she can breathe. And the list goes on. One reflex that’s always amazing to witness is ‘the breast crawl. Many babies, when placed on mama’s abdomen or chest after birth, instinctively crawl to their mother’s nipple, guided by the primal attraction of a baby to her own mother’s unique milk scent. It’s a powerful mammalian response. The steps of the breast crawl were even documented by neonatologist Marshall Klaus, who studied maternal-newborn bonding. It’s so easy to get completely overwhelmed and fearful that we have no idea what our babies need. Is she okay? Will he eat? Is she sleeping enough, pooping enough? What are those sounds he’s making? And yes - it’s an absolutely steep learning curve that can feel quite mysterious at the beginning. One way to center yourself in the midst of overwhelm is to take a minute, step back, and remember that you are a dyad - an interconnected unit made for each other. Although society has trained us to view newborns as completely helpless and moms as needing a team of experts to tell us what to do - and yes, help and guidance from those who have walked this path can help lighten the load - but just as our newborns have at least 75 instincts - you have innate wisdom, too. The more you learn to trust those whispers coming from deep within yourself - the louder and clearer they will become. It’s like a muscle - except this muscle has been working out since the very first human baby was brought to her mama’s chest. You’ve got this - you are the expert on your own baby. Con't in comments

Ancestors are something I’m familiar with. Growing up we would always honour our ancestors in ceremony and pray for their guidance, help and protection; so calling on those who have come before us makes sense to me and sometimes I access this in my work for those that are called to do so! #respect #ancestralwisdom #filialpiety #yvrbirthworker #vancitybirthworker #yvrbirthkeeper #vancitybirthkeeper #yvrdoula #yvrbirthdoula #postpartumdoula Posted @withregram @wyld_birthandp...ostpartum Can I use a Lifeline? What a beautiful concept that we can tap into a collective experience of all the people who have birthed before us, in every which way. Our ancestors who have birthed in fields, in barns, in basements, attics, bedrooms, in slavery, in hiding, in silence, alone, in community, strapped down, asleep, in hospitals, in ORs, on tables, in ambulances, on vacation, in private suites, in penthouse apartments, in studios, in birthing centers, in family homes...on and on. In the moments when we need to know- will I be ok? Can I do this? Do I have what it takes? We call upon the wisdom of all who birthed before us: Help! Are you with me? We can tell you, the answer is YES. Birth lives in our bones + you are not alone w your ancestors supporting you in the wings. See more
