CTV NEWS VANCOUVER ISLAND TONITE, SEPT 8th. Gord Kurbis interviewed me this morning about reports that drivers were ignoring Emergency Vehicles and not pulling over and stopping. Scheduled to be on tonight starting at 5pm. I put in a plug for motorcycle riders in general because our vulnerability required better situational awareness. I said car drivers who were riders are often better drivers because of their exposure to the increased risks involved in riding. ... Too many distractions these days with cars wired for the net, hands-free and regular phones and a lack of attention to everything that is happening ALL around us. MY "Roadcraft Refresher" can give you some new info about handling traffic safer and refresh those others you already have. About an hour or so of your time. Could save your life and your bike.

A GREAT WEEK...AND MORE TO COME! Congratulations to Bison students this week. Successful road tests in Nanaimo and Campbell River, successful MST's in Campbell River-three today...and another in Port Alberni on Friday. This weekend a new rider and her second lesson and a family group on Sunday to sample some of our advanced course skills to build on top of their existing riding. All in all, it continues to be gratifying when riders acquire new skills and advance their existing ones. Remember our goal is to help you be the best rider you can so you can live to ride another day....and another day....and another day...you get the idea. We all "Must have the precious" to be safe...the "precious" of skillful riding.

ICBC resumes enhanced road assessments, motorcycle, recreational trailer and passenger vehicle road testing Starting July 7, ICBC will be resuming Enhanced Road Assessments, motorcycle and recreational trailer road tests. Customers can book an appointment from today by calling our Driver Licensing customer contact centre at 1-800-950-1498 or 250-978-8300. Motorcycle road tests can also be booked online on icbc.com. We ask customers for their patience as we anticipate high ca...ll volumes. We’ll be contacting customers whose Enhanced Road Assessments, motorcycle and recreational trailer road tests were cancelled between March 17 and 30 to prioritize their appointment. RoadSafetyBC will be sending customers who qualify for an Enhanced Road Assessment appointment a letter which include those who had their appointment cancelled because of the pandemic. For motorcycle road tests, riders are not required to wear a mask due to the nature of the test but are required to wear the safety vest, which is sanitized after each use. Conducting motorcycle tests now allows us to reduce the current backlog, which will free up more road test spaces and allows us to secure more PPE as we prepare for the restart of passenger vehicle testing. In addition, conducting motorcycle tests during summer months reduces the likelihood of cancelled tests due to weather. As a reminder, we ask that customers arrive 15 minutes before their road test appointment and ensure they have the required identification be prepared for health screening questions ensure the interior of their vehicle is clean, and maintain physical distance of 2 metres (6 feet) from ICBC representatives when possible. .

So a Whiskey Distiller, an Educator, a Business owner and a student ride to a MST test. Sound like the opening line of a joke....but is was no joke, but....people were very happy! Big congratulations to all four Bison students who passed their MST this morning in Campbell River. Four in...four out and now you can ride on your own. ICBC is scaling up the MST schedules because there has been a massive increase in Motorcycle Learners tests being completed. That means they will be trying to get their MST as soon as possible Campbell River is having one every two weeks now and will increase to one per week for a while. They expect a log jam as everybody scrambles for those MSTtest dates. If you are ready for yours, call and book one. If you are not and we can help you with the skills to pass, get hold of me ASAP.

SOBERING NEWS FROM ICBC, WHO IS BEING KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASHES HERE IN BC. https://www2.gov.bc.ca///statistical/mvi-motorcyclist.pdf Key takeaways and recall that 2018 was a particularly bad year for motorcyclist-involved fatal MVIs:... 23% reduction year over year on motorcyclist deaths Males continue to account for 9 in 10 deaths The majority of decedents are from B.C. and are middle-aged Not surprisingly, May-October period accounts for the majority of deaths (35/41 in 2019, 51/53 in 2018) One takeaway from looking at the ages of the biggest death group, is that middle aged riders and older are at the biggest risk. Very likely because practically none had any training or very limited at best. The older you are, the less likely you have had any formal training-because there likely was none. They do not know the skills that the younger and more recent riders have. None of the older riders likely have the specific low speed handling skills, proper braking techniques, push steering...like the Hurt Report said all those years ago.. lack of skills in .braking, swerving and cornering are still killing riders today. I help lots of long term riders in that age group, who are realizing that they need to know some new stuff. The first formal training I ever had was after racing and riding for 29 years. Thought I knew it all and in the first minutes of the Police course, I found out I didn't. I learned more in those 3 weeks than I had in 29 years of riding. They are not difficult, but if you don't know what you don't know, then you'll never know what you don't know.
