Let Them Help This past week we helped a friend make a cat house. Of course the kids wanted to jump in and help so we let them do the paint job. Did they get messy? Yes (zoom in on Stetson’s face) Was I slightly on edge the whole time? Yes Did they have fun and feel proud of their work? Yes ... Did we have more clean up? Yes Was it worth it? Yes. It didn’t happen over night but I’ve realized the growth in the kids when they help is worth the extra mess and have become less anxious in the process. Yes, sometimes it’s easier just to do it myself but what does that teach these kids? So here’s your challenge today ... Farming lesson #101: never expect things to go as planned. This morning we experienced a typical farming morning where a job that should have only taken 20 minutes took over an hour... We were going to drop the oat feeder in the yearling bull pen and had to go through the group of cows/calves which adds a bit of excitement because they get excited and crowd the feeder. And these were the events that followed: one of the yearling bulls snuck out and got mixed up with the co...w/calves tractor and trailer just about got stuck(pictured) Stetson got his finger slammed in the tractor door and cried for the remainder of the morning. After all the excitement we did manage to single out the yearling bull and get him back in his rightful pen. Due to my(Becky) slick driving skills I got the tractor unstuck ... yes I got it stuck in the first place ;).
