Black Queer Network 06.04.2021

"The number one thing we need to do to celebrate Black queer history, Black queer futures and Black queer now is to name ourselves. To be named, to be acknowledged throughout the rest of the year. We have to recognize that these issues don’t go away after February. Our lives don’t begin and end in February. So for every organization that calls us in to do a keynote, that calls us in to do an arts workshop, that calls us in to talk about Black Canadian history, or Black queer history, or Black women’s history or whatever the case might be that can also be done the other 11 months of the year. Because we’re still here.

Just a reminder. We are here 365 days of the year not just the shortest month.

For black history month, everyone's newsfeeds are flooded with a sudden surge of black content. For years, those of us in the Queer community would only see the same list of Black Queer People all of whom were American. Until 2019. We would like to draw attention to an incredible series called 'Queering Black History Month' that a local organization here in London puts on every year. Queer Events has ensured that Black Lives are rewritten back into Queer history and in add...ition, focused on Queer Black Canadian history and people! This series reinforces that our lives matter. That there are elders to look up to for inspiration. That our community is visible and our work matters. That we have always been here. Thank You @QueerEvents for holding the space.
