Black Barn Farms is going BATTY!! Two bat houses (hand made by one super awesome brother) were dropped off to the farm today, complete with an ode to our childhood. #yothenameisbatty ... Shepherds Pie. It’s one of my favourite dinners that my mom used to make when I was a kid. Usually it’s because we had a ton of random leftover vegetables in the fridge that had to be used up...add a flakey bottom crust and some ground beef and you’ve got yourself a well rounded meal! Now, my mom used to own a local catering company. She made all the food from scratch herself and was well known for making those stick to your bones, home cooked, walk into grandmas house a...nd smell the love kind of meals! And she makes one of the BEST shepherds pies (obviously ). So the culinary bar is set pretty high in my family... But guys, I think I may have gotten close with this one! And I think the secret is that I mixed ground beef and ground pork together! The flavour is amazing! So much moisture! Give it a try and let us know what you think! Recipe makes enough filling for two 9pies Start your potatoes first: 8 medium potatoes (for 2 pies) -peel, slice into smaller pieces, and boil for about 15mins or until a fork goes through a potato easily. -drain the water. -add about 4tbsp of butter and about 1/3 to 1/2cup of cream or milk and mash until smooth. Filling: 1lb grass fed ground beef 1lb forest raised ground pork 1 medium-large onion 2 medium carrots (chopped small) 3/4c corn (fresh or frozen) 3/4c peas (fresh or frozen) Basil Garlic powder Marjoram Salt & Pepper to taste 1Cup Chicken stock 2tbsp Corn starch for thickening. -Use a large frying pan or pot. -Add a bit of oil and cook carrots and onions together first for about 3mins or until onions are starting to get translucent. -Add beef and pork. Cook until browned. -Add spices (you’ll notice I didn’t put amounts for these... I just wing it here. We like a lot of garlic, a lot of basil, and a bit of marjoram. Just taste as you go until you like it!) -Sprinkle corn starch on top and toss to coat -Add chicken stock and simmer until thickened. -mix in peas Add the filling to your pie crust, top with mashed potatoes so the edges are sealed and your filling can’t escape all over your oven. Bake 400 for 40mins until crust is golden

Check out this #historicbeauty this is where it all started for us. When Phil’s dad purchased their property back in 1980 from the Jaggis this barn was already a long term resident, operating as a dairy. We’re not sure how old it is exactly, but some locals can remember it being here before the trans Canada was paved (which would potentially put it pre-1930’s). This is the barn that Phil grew up with, where he learned the tricks of the trade and developed his love of anima...ls. It even became the temporary home to our first batch of piglets until the weather warmed up enough to put them outside.
