Did you know that...in 1877 when Treaty 7 was being held between the Canadian government and the Kainai, Piegan, Siksika, Stoney, and Sarcee tribes, Crowfoot wa...s a leader for the Siksika and when asked to sign the document was suspicious of the government. Back then, signatories were only required to make an X on the document and the government didn't even let them make the X. They had to touch the pen to acknowledge their signature and then a government representative signed an X for them. Chief Crowfoot didn't want to touch the pen, so he only made a gesture and never touched it, but they signed his name anyway. Later, when talking to other Blackfoots, he exclaimed that he didn't touch the pen so he didn't sign the treaty. But to this day, the government considers the treaty binding on Crowfoots followers. In the same Treaty negotiations, the interpreter for the Blackfoots was drunk, causing mass confusion and misunderstanding about the terms. Ultimately, the government still held all the Blackfoot chiefs to the provisions even though they didn't have a clear understanding of what they were agreeing to in the Treaty. See more
