Happy Fall Back Friday! Today I wanted to share a series of prints from 2014 or so. Marks of Meaning resulted from experimentation with visual poetry and computer programs. The series continues my exploration of the aesthetics of line drawing and language, studying how written language offers meaning, or marks of meaning. When I made these, I had wanted to experiment with scale and so I printed them as large as I could afford. This series of 24x36 posters printed in blac...k and white on bond paper are limited editions and available for sale! I’d like to revisit these in the future, perhaps expanding the scale further with vinyl, or maybe drawing by hand instead of using the computer. Marks of Meaning: Visual Poetry was shown in Potemkin Gallery in Lethbridge in 2013, at Spruce Grove Art Gallery in 2014, and again in Edmonton Public Library’s Gallery At Milner in 2015. People seemed to be continually surprised by these, tending to read them aloud and muse over the line between poetry and art. In other news, tomorrow (Saturday Mar. 20) I will be hosting a paper crane making workshop at 2 PM MST! The Zoom link will be available in the Facebook event page if you would like to join me. If you have some scrap paper you can follow along, or if you want to just hang out while I fold cranes for an hour that would be great too! Hope to see you there! #FallBackFriday #TheWordeater #InstallationArt #MarksOfMeaning #VisualPoetry #language #art #YEG #YEGArts #YEGArtScene #AlbertaAve #AlbertaAvenue #Inspiration #Create #Grateful #CanadianArt #ShamelessSelfPromo

Happy New Work Wednesday! Today for New Work Wednesday I thought I’d play with collage! Collage is a technique that I don’t use all the time, but I enjoy the element of play and surprise involved. It also reminds me of those old school punk photocopy zines and stuff! It’s a great way to generate some ideas and just Make Something. Collage can take as long or as short as you like. I like using torn up books and magazines and playing with the colours and content of original so...urces. I don't have a plan in mind, I just look for colours or textures that look interesting together. #NewWorkWednesday #TheWordeater #Collage #Play #Art #Process #ProcessVideo #WordArt #YEG #YEGArts #YEGArtScene #AlbertaAve #AlbertaAvenue #Inspiration #Create #Grateful #CanadianArt

In today’s edition of Freyja Consumes Art, I’d like to introduce you to a couple of my favourite prints that I found during my time at the National Gallery of Canada. Both prints are by female Inuit artists. The first is by Hannah Kigusiuq (Inuit), titled Innuttiut, 1974. It is a stonecut print on laid Japanese paper. Kigusiuq lived in Nunavut from 1931-1995. Innuttiut means many people in the Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) dialect where Kigusiuq began her practice. This is o...ne of several pieces shown at the NGC that I kept going back to revisit. I love all the happy faces. When the pandemic hit, it reminded me of how close we are to each other, even if we’re physically distant. Kigusiuq was part of the Baker Lake Artists collective, and her work was included in exhibitions and collections across North America. The second and third prints are by Kenojuak Ashevak. Ashevak (Inuit) lived on Baffin Island, in Arctic Quebec, and Cape Dorset in the Northwest Territories (1927-2013). She had a long and illustrious career working with carving, drawing, and printing. I love birds and I especially adore her distinctive owls and ravens. Ashevak uses different colour palettes and shapes, but her birds have similar faces that allow me to recognize her work before I see her name. Autumnal Owl (1999) is a stonecut owl with vibrant and dynamic lines, warm colours, and a sly smile. Spectacular Ravens is a brightly coloured collection of ravens with distinguished composition. It looks like they are layered, like a collage, but each colour would have been printed separately, one at a time. How did she line it up so perfectly?? I enjoy following the ravens to see how they line up, and their cheerful, wide-eyed expressions. I am still trying to learn more about Indigenous artists, particularly those in Canada. Do you have any favourites that I should learn about? #FreyjaConsumesArt #TheWordeater #printmaking #stonecut #HannahKigusiuq #ManyFaces #KenojuakAshevak #owl #raven #InuitArt #Art #NationalGalleryOfCanada #YEG #YEGArts #YEGArtScene #AlbertaAve #AlbertaAvenue #Inspiration #Create #Grateful #CanadianArt #SupportIndigenousArtists

Captain Zeal is the bravest pirate hedgehog to ever sail the seven seas! He and his friends, Lok, Od, and Tor sail on their ship, the Freya, and have exciting adventures like fighting the notorious Captain Snekspeare, finding treasure, and befriending the fearsome Kraken through a mutual love of gold and chicken. With handwritten text and acrylic illustrations, this heartfelt adventure story about Captain Zeal is based on a real hedgehog, though his adventures as a pirate are made up. The real Zeal prefers sleeping in the day and running a lot at night. However, he really does like chicken, and he really does sleep like that! As some restrictions begin to lift around the province tomorrow, we enter week 4 of our Thoughtful Thursdays series. This week we are speaking to Toshiaki Koike. Toshiaki is a friend of Bleeding Heart’s as he exhibited his work with us during Open Walls in March 2020! Toshiaki’s main area of interest art-wise is expressing the composition and the disposition between different beings in observing everyday scenery with the time transition. He enjoys spending timed doing artwo...rk and fieldwork. Here’s what Toshiaki had to say: 1. How have you been handling the global pandemic so far? When it comes to income, I have a low income originally. But my quality of life has not been worse because I am working part-time at a grocery store. I'm busy every day doing art activities including doing artwork and sales methods according to my own schedule and in a way that I have been working on for a while. 2. Have these sentiments informed your art in any way? I don't think it has been particularly informed or inspired. If I had to say, I think I've deepened my conviction that what I've been pursuing to "expressing transition" is meaningful. 3. Have you created any new art out of our current global situation? I don't know if it started with this situation, but when Nina Haggerty Center of the Arts introduced Zentangle in a series of activities called #NinaArtChallenge, I got interested and inspired, and now it is my own way. I am doing and submitting works in the way that I have interpreted. 4. Do you have any advice for fellow artists during this time? I like original works that are supported by solid intentions and have depth after trial and error, rather than following a temporary trend or focusing on imitation or entertainment. I want them to express it. In that regard, I would like them to turn to the wide world in which humans are merely members of it than the human-centred world. 5. What is the first place (restaurant, store, place etc...) you want to go once you are able I would like to participate in art events and similar events where I can physically exhibit and sell my work and exchange ideas with the audience and other artists. Thanks so much, Toshiaki, for being willing to share with us how you’re doing and what you’re up to! Your use of nature to inform your art is inspiring! For those curious, please see below title numbers of the three works in the photo. Toshiaki is also accessible via http://toshiakiart.com/ wherein you can find more information about his art and items for purchase if interested. 1.
