My kids and I have always had a rule, if you do it respectfully you can always tell me if you don't agree with my punishments or my rules, or anything I've said to you. it doesn't mean I will change my mind, or the consequences, but you can absolutely have a discussion with me about it. And they do! Haha

Another Father's day is over, and the dads who are amazing have had their chance to be celebrated. This is excellent. However, I'd like to just take a moment to acknowledge the dads who aren't, and those who feel that pain every Father's day. If you have a dad who wasn't around, who broke your heart, or hurt you in some way, I'm so sorry. Growing up without a dad who seems to care is a truly traumatising thing, one that you constantly try to rationalize and reason in your ...young (and adult) mind. Always blaming yourself, wondering why you're not good enough for him to want to spend time with, see, call or have a healthy relationship with. I hope you found (or find) a way to heal. I hope you found (or find) the positive male role models in your life, and look them to for healthy relationship modeling. I hope you were or are able to heal and choose a healthy spouse and parent for your own children, and to emulate different behaviour for them. If you're a father who isn't giving their all to their children, know that you are affecting them in deep and long lasting ways. I hope you find a way to heal yourself, and connect with your children in a way that will allow everyone to move forward. Don't leave them with deep, and lifelong scars. If you are a mother keeping a loving father from their children, please understand that you are hurting your children in ways that they may never heal from, and one day they will understand that you did this. Just because someone makes a bad partner, does not mean they make a bad father.
