This article features my accessible artwork and goes over interesting methods that are being used in modern, inclusive, immersive, and interactive curation of "visual art" and how artists are pushing the boundaries of accommodation to make galleries and museums universally accessible to all people with disabilities.

This is my grade 3 class of students I’ve been teaching in my artist in residency program. In this lesson we were creating accessible art and using empathy to think about how to make a painting tactile so that it would be accessible for someone who is blind. Each painting has sculptural elements that each student worked on. I'm very impressed with their creativity and the amount of thought that was put into each project. They have had a lot of growth since I’ve taught them basic painting skills; stay tuned for more amazing paintings from the students that have become very disability aware. Afterwards all the students shared what they painted, why they painted it and something we learned from this project.

I am so proud of my students! Each student created a tactile painting that was designed to be accessible for people with vision loss. Today they learned how to discuss art and critique, we had a sensory exercise where everyone got to touch and feel the sculpture that they created with the texture on their painting, they learned the anatomy of the human eye and how vision works and this photo is of one of the classes that I’m teaching.they learned how to photograph and draw their own eye. So impressed by my pupils hard work. Wingspan Dis/arts, Culture and Public Pedagogy

Last weekend I had the honor of speaking at this conference about my optic nerve disease. Its felt awesome having others affected by my disease viewing and touching my tactile accessible art. Those people truely see what I see so we had a great connection. I will be excited to speak at the next LHON confer3ence in Montreal next year! LHON Canada is doing amazing things to help foster a true community for people affected by lebers and vision loss and I am proud to be apart of it. https://www.facebook.com/events/1135772609919548/

My passion is to help other blind or low vision people out there. Eye Appeal is an amazing fundraiser which all donated paintings go to auction and the funds are kept to help blind people on Vancouver Island. I donated this painting called "The Watcher of the Woods."I used greens and reds to open the conversation about how 1 in 12 men have some form of colour blindness. I also obscured the eyes because I cannot see the eyes of anybody when I am looking at them, its where my blind spot is. I cannot see my own eyes in the mirror. I am happy to help other blind and low vision people through my art. If you would like to support the CNIB and support the work I do, please consider donating to my CNIB birthday fundraiser, I want to raise $300 for my 30th. https://www.facebook.com/donate/301248460766705/10161597735985632/

Best part of today at my teaching job... 1 student brought in a painting for me, another brought a graffiti drawing, and too many to count have been working on ...their drawing skills that I have been teaching them. Today we were making accessible art and thinking outside of the box on how to make inclusive artwork that would allow the blind to experience their art through touch, a great empathy exercise. 5 hour commute to work is totally worth it when I am able to educate grade 3-7 kids about hard topics like privilege, prejudice, discrimination (in all forms), ableism, accessibility and accomidation. On top of this I got the students learning about how to draw with charcoal, highlight, low lights and shadow and how to use shading to make 2D forms become 3D. Oh and I even got to teach a secret code and language to the kids, braille and why its important. It felt amazing heari...ng their excitement about learning all of this! We are changing lives through Wingspan Dis/arts, Culture and Public Pedagogy! Next week: How to Paint Colour theory Colour mixing Braille calligraphy See more
