I’m Mexican No, I’m not spicy. Or fiesty. Or exotic. I’m just not bland Because my culture is too rich.... Because my hips give in to the beat of a drum. And my tongue rolls with a passion. Because I come from vibrant colors And full skirts. And intricate patterns in my gene pool. Warrior and conqueror. Because I have te quiero y te amo. While you’ve got to stick to I love you. Because I come from women with rifles and food that excites you. And the very hands that harvest this land, hold the very hearts that harvested me. Truth. A beautiful portrayal of our collective experience and grief. The loss of a life we took for granted as our right rather than our privilege.

I know a teacher, an indigenous Elder and wonderful source of wisdom whose name is Katori. Katori once advised me that whenever I am speaking to a group, giving a presentation or honouring an occasion, I must ensure to establish strong opening. He emphasized that the opening is the most important part of every speech, sharing or show and that this must include 5 essential components: 1. Acknowledgment (gratitude for life and land on which you stand) 2. Intention (mindful way ...to come in/ bring people into the room) 3. Mood (establish a tone and mood and harmonious feeling) 4. Clarity (Who are you and why are you here?) 5. Contact (Make a connection and establish a relationship) These threads of wisdom have now become vibrant strands that weave through the fabric of both my personal and teaching practices. Every morning, upon waking, I offer this wisdom to my audience of one: the Self. It has become an essential practice for what feels to be an essential relationship. To teach is to demonstrate and in every moment you are demonstrating the qualities that you embody. Katori’s influence has also opened my mind to the wisdom of the heart: 1. Acknowledge your gratitude for this present moment, your breath, your life. 2. Set Intention to mindfully bring yourself into the space. (Body, Mind, Spirit) 3. Establish the tone and mood through the matrix of good feelings. 4. Acknowledge your purpose and identity and visualize the desire for self/others 5. Make Contact with the most important relationship in this life experience: God/Source/Self/Life/Creator Get up. Rise up. Wise up. https://open.spotify.com/track/5r8dDsxSUwFceKl53xA3Rx
