RANUNCULUS These flowers resemble ‘overstuffed’ roses, with many layers of densely packed petals. They look especially pretty when their flowers are just starting to open and barely curling their petals outward. Different variegations of ranunculus give you smaller and larger floral rounds, adds Naylor. They come in white, light pink, light lavender and deeper pink, plus variegations that create multi-toned flowers such as white flowers with pink petal or lavender edges. Whil...e ranunculus cost more than carnations and lisiathus, their blooms are so full you'll need fewer to make a statementplus they’re still cheaper than full garden roses. Naylor also adds a savings tip, Here’s a way to save even more on your ranunculus: white and cream-colored ranunculus are in season (and less expensive) during the spring, yellow-orange is in season winter through summer (not fall) and pink and red ranunculus are in season year-round. So, if roses are starting to get pricy in early May, ranunculus is right there to fill your bridal floral pieces for less. See more

CARNATIONS With its fluffy, round bloom and vibrant, ruffled-edged petals, the carnation is perhaps the most inexpensive alternative to roses around (expect rock-bottom prices between October and December). Plus, they stand up to the heat of summertime weddings beautifully, says Naylor. Carnations come in a range of colors from bright red and pure white to blush pink, orange and yellow.

LISIANTHUS This is a top alternative, offering a subtle tea rose effect, says Naylor. You’ll find these blooms in blush pinks, deep reds, summery yellows, as well as lavenders, deep purples and violets. To save even more money, Naylor suggests ordering, both single lisianthus (which look just a bit like tulips or poppies) and those lush double-flower lisianthus for variety in your arrangements and a break on your expenses.
