Health Canada recommends that all exclusively breastfed, healthy, term infants receive 400 IU of vitamin D per day. 800 IU for Northern Native communities. . . If the mother is taking a dose of 4000 IU per day, it raises her levels to the point that no further supplementation of the infant is needed. .... . I chose to supplement myself and not my daughter. It made more sense for me to up my dose than introduce anything other than breastmilk to my baby's gut. I did supplement my son for about a month before learning I can up my dose. Research on taking higher doses of 10000 IU per day shows levels stay within optimal range but definitely chat with a trusted provider about your dose. I've been taking 10000 IU this winter to help keep my immune system happy. . . Vitamin D is essential for optimal health and immune health. Most of us in Canada are deficient. . . Do you take vitamin D?? . #vitamind #caledon #holisticnutrition #bloomnaturally #smallbusiness #healthyeating #fish #eggs #newmama #feedingbabies See more

Spending this week reflecting on 2020 and setting intentions for 2021. What a year its been! Losing my dog Benga in the middle of quarantine was definitely the hardest day of my entire life. My heart still hurts....2 months to the day we lost our family dog Zoe. Then exactly 2 days later my daughter Kaia was born at home. A year of highs and lows. So grateful for my family and friends. I'm super excited about 2021 and some exciting changes to my Bloom Naturally business. I'm ...on Mat Leave from my nursing job for the entire year because canada has an 18 month leave option and I'm here for it. My son turns 3!?!? I'll also be writing my Board exam to become a board certified lactation consultant so I'll be studying hard. Thanks for following along. . . What are you most excited about for 2021? . . #newyear #holisticnutrition #bloomnaturally #smallbusiness #lactationconsultant #organicbodycare #canada #caledon #natural See more

Mammals make milk that is perfectly suited to their baby's requirements for growth and development. . Baby elephant seals eat every 4 days but needs to quickly gain fat for protection against the cold so its mothers milk is super high in fat. . A baby calf has to gain muscle strength quickly and also be left to sleep quietly and safely while the mama cow wanders wanders the land eating grass. So cows produce milk high in protein, particularly casein containing casomorphins, ...which induce sleep. . The human baby is born in a relatively immature state with kidneys and liver not able to process high protein feeds and their brain will triple in weight in the next 2 years to achieve 80% of its final size. So human milk is low in protein but the highest in all mammalian milk in lactose which is necessary for brain development. . . Pretty cool! Right?! . . #breastfeeding #breastisbest #speciesspecificity #organic #natural #optimalnutrition #holisticnutrition See more

My little boo is going to be 6 months on December 30th! Where did the time go?? She is still exclusively breastfed but definitely showing signs she is ready for solid food. Signs of readiness include: baby can hold their head up baby can sit and lean forward (not just in a highchair) this shows baby has the core strength to sit and swallow food safely baby tries to pick up objects and put them in their mouth (you are looking for the pincer grasp)... baby is about 6 months of age (this is super important because babys gut needs time to mature (at least 6 months) before introducing anything other than breastmilk. and she has 5 teeth. Teeth are definitely not needed to start solid foods but the fact that she has 5 is telling me that her body knows she ready. . . Any guesses for what her first food will be?? . . #organic #babyledweaning #babyfood #feedingkids #holistichealth #holisticnutrition #newmama #bloomnaturally See more

One of the first things I learned in nutrition school is our gut health determines our overall health. Healthy gut=healthy people. The GI tract of a normal fetus is colonized while in utero with bacteria from the maternal digestive tract. This is a big reason why optimal nutrition and probiotics supplementation is am essential part of prenatal health. . . The type of delivery also has an effect on the baby's intestinal microbiota: vaginally born infants are colonized with th...eir mothers bacteria. Cesarean born infants initial exposure is most likely to environmental microbes from the air, other infants, medical and nursing staff. The increase in csections and formula plays a huge role in adults gut health later in life. . . This info has started a new trend called Vaginal Seeding. "Vaginal seeding, also known as microbirthing, is a procedure wherebyvaginalfluids (and hencevaginalmicrobes) are applied to a new-born child delivered by caesarean section. The purpose of the technique is to recreate the natural transfer of bacteria that the baby gets during avaginalbirth". Pretty cool right!?! . . C section mamas - was this offered to you?? I'm hoping as time goes on it becomes common practice. . . #probiotics #csection #birth #guthealth #holisticnutrition #pregnancy #postpartum #newmama #breastfeeding #vaginalseeding #holistichealth See more
