This chilly weather will eventually pass, and when it does, we want to be ready to get out in the field. We are looking for new volunteers to support our citize...n science programs. You can learn more about our volunteer opportunities and submit a volunteer application online: https://www.annapolisriver.ca/volunteer We will be hosting a series of webinars to introduce our field-based citizen science opportunities. To register for a session, visit: https://www.annapolisriver.ca/upcoming-events Recordings of these sessions will be posted online. Participation in these webinars is not required to become a volunteer, however, there will be requirements for some training & orientation before heading into the field. Our programs are focused on the Annapolis River watershed (roughly Digby through Aylesford), but breeding bird surveys can be conducted anywhere across Nova Scotia.

Winter tidbit # 1: Avoid Wearing Cotton Cotton clothes and socks are the worst things you can wear during the winter, because cotton holds moisture and loses it...s insulating properties. If you get wet from sweat or snow, the cotton will quickly absorb it and keep it close to your skin, making you feel even colder. Make Your Move #WinterTidbit #TakeTheRoofOffWinter

Joe Cracker, a new trail near the Norawarren trailhead, is open! Joe Cracker is a ~400 m long green/easy singletrack that is accessed from In-n-Out and Warren t...rails. Joe was machine-built with hand finishing by Shoreline Dirtworks last Nov/Dec. Looks good! A pleasure to work with you! Joe Cracker provides more introductory-level experiences in the watershed, and weaves through Acadian forest and by small wetlands. MRWA volunteers and crew have also made significant improvements to Nora and Warren, smoothing some rough areas and transitions so the trails are more 'green'. Enjoy. The name? Joe Cracker was a 13y old resident of Herring Cove, who saved passengers on the HMS Tribune when it ran aground and sank in the ocean near the Cove in 1797. Joe rowed a dory to the Tribune. A local hero. Joe Cracker trail was part of the original 2016 trail plan and permissions. It just takes time to find resources. One trail at a time! Although the trail is opened, please avoid it when wet, especially as a sensitive fresh trail. Joe Cracker map and info on Trailforks https://www.trailforks.com/trails/joe-cracker/

If you see a violation on the BLT Trail, such as an unauthorized vehicle, please call Department of Environment Conservation Officers at 1-800-565-2224 or the RCMP Non-Emergency line at 1-800-803-7267. It's very important to report violations because it helps to show that patrolling is valued and necessary on our trail.

The landscape at Peggy’s Cove is so special. Improved infrastructure for safety, accessibility, and visitor experience is important, and we worked hard to ensur...e this project also balanced the priorities of preserving the landscape and disrupting as little as possible. We’ve already tackled clearer information on the location and size of the Viewing Deck, and we’ve clarified that access to the lighthouse and rocks will continue. Now, let’s talk landscape. All in the deck is around 14,000 square feet. 12,000 of those 14,000 square feet are being built on top of an existing roadway. The remaining 2,000 square feet does extend over the landscape. This bit is a cantilever, which means it’s supported only from one end to avoid any new ground disturbance. It was also carefully designed to blend with the landscape and not impact the iconic views of the lighthouse or coastline. Earlier design drawings did have this piece of the Viewing Deck extending further out toward the coastline, but we received feedback from the community in February 2019 that it needed to be less intrusive, so we’ve made changes along the way and scaled back accordingly. The approach we landed on is sensitive to the landscape and still allows for an accessible way to experience the coastline. Most of the community engaged and worked with us on this and many other elements of the plan butto be clearnot everyone engaged and not everyone likes everything about the plan. Again, let’s keep the conversation going. Stay tuned for details on public information sessions we’ll be hosting next week and the following. In the meantime, send us your thoughts, ideas, and feedback at [email protected].

The sun is starting to come out a bit (fingers crossed) and it’s a beautiful Friday out there! What better time is there to #TakeTheRoofOffWinter?! We’re proud... to be partnering and collaborating with Recreation Nova Scotia for this winter active campaign that helps Nova Scotians of all ages improve their health and quality of life by being more active during winter months. Moving more doesn’t have to be time-consuming. You could go for a short 10-minute walk today in your neighborhood or visit a local park for a wonderful photo-op like this one. Then submit a photo/video to our first of 5 Take The Roof Off Winter contests! Have you heard? EVERYONE who enters wins a prize pack! Score! It’s a fun and healthy way to kick-off a new year! http://cutt.ly/OjaPRaa

Kev and Dee are in love with each other and with travelling. They’ve been to Hawaii, Rissers Beach on the South Shore and many places in between. As the world becomes more accessible, they hope to take you along on their adventures.
