Beavers are ecosystems engineers, meaning that they alter the environment around them to accomplish their goals.... and what is a beavers goal? To make dams so they can flood an area and have their own personal pond and food source. What intelligent creatures. Have you ever seen a beaver dam before? This view is downstream of a very small beaver dam in South Frontenac. #beavers #ecosystemengineers #smart #didyouknow #learningwithnature #beaverdam #environment #wildlife #autumn #SouthFrontenac #kingston #goforawalk #getoutside

To a geologist this looks like a lot more than 'dirt'. In fact, this 'dirt' was logged (e.g. investigated) by a geologist to create an understanding of the different layers, how they were deposited and how groundwater moves through them. Take a closer look and you will notice all the different coloured golf t's. These were used to identify contacts (white) between different sediment types, and sample locations (pink and red) where further analysis was completed on the 'dirt'. Dirt is much more than you may think! #geology #dirt #fieldwork #rocks #naturalhistory #nature #learnwithus #enviornmentalscience

When a geologist looks at sediment, they are looking at many things including: grain size (is it clay, silt, sand, gravel), sorting (i.e. are all the grains similar sizes or a bunch of different sizes), hardness/compaction, moisture, colour, rock type for gravels, any structures (e.g. layers), and how it transitions into the next geologic layer. From all this information a geologist can start piecing together the geologic history of the site, get insight into how groundwater... might move, where contaminants might accumulate, and much more! #geology #geologist #history #earthdetective #didyouknow #womeninscience #puzzles #science #environmentalscience #learningwithnature #learningtogether

Plants create new plants by distributing their seeds and each plant has evolved their own special way of transporting those seeds to new areas. Since plants cannot move some rely on the wind to transport their seeds (like the cat-tail) and others rely on attaching to animal fur (like burrs). Other plants will rely on gravity or even being eaten. Get outside and take a look around to see what seeds you can find and how you think they will get transported to new places so the species can expand its range! #nature #getoutside
