HERES A LITTLE NUMBER THAT PROMISES SPRING. One of a very few projects that made it into the shop before the bad thing happened. Its perked us up just to know fresh, lovely things go on. Take care of yourselves everyone.
HELLO ALL. Just a note that weve closed the doors at Blue Velvet Upholstery for an undetermined period of time in acknowledgment of the seriousness of our worlds present situation. Tuck yourselves into the coziest chair you can find. Settle in. Stay safe.
Boy, do we love these cantaloupes.
Kim Nash at the Banff Props Builder Practicum.
A lovely nursing chair. Latest from Blue Velvet girls.
TOSS PILLOWS with antlers. What could be better?! And these ones dont devour your garden ...
I AM A PRETTY PLAIN CHAIR, but look at the gorgeous seat I got at Blue Velvet Upholstery!!!
NAKED VICTORIAN and fully-dressed Victorian in stylish black outfit (all buttoned down) by the Blue Velvet gals.
YOU DONT HAVE TO SETTLE for these ugly toss pillows for your car. See the Blue Velvet girls for stylish alternatives.
WE CALLED THESE the Twilight Zone window seats. But check out Kims matching abilities! Hell, shes even lined up the floor pattern ...
SUMMERS NOT OVER until its over. We bring you two of Blue Velvets favorite projects: THE CHAIRS OF SUMMER.
BUT WAIT! THERES A SQUIRREL too!
Before ... during ... and after Blue Velvets restoration. HOW DARN CUTE IS THIS? Sanderson fabric; pattern: Hedgehog and Squirrel.
HERES a couple of groovy flashes from projects past. So summery!
Jaime Pitarch "Subject, Object, Abject."
HOW FAB IS THIS? Our CEO and image mentor Cate Blanchette sent us this personal video congratulating us on a job well done. We cant seem to get it started up, but oh well. The gist is: she wishes she lived on Saltspring so that she could drop by our shop and see how upholstery works. Its something she always wanted to do, but got stuck in acting and being famous instead. We knew there was a certain sadness about her ...
WHAT A PROJECT. Weve gone from this to this, in a mere 7 + days! HAPPY CANADA weekend everyone. Be nice to our breathtaking country. Be good to each other. And keep your shoes off the furniture.
FULLY-RESTORED chaisse lounge/fainting couch in a Sanderson William Morris print: "Seaweed." How perfect is that for a Salt Spring Island island home or any home at all? We really do want to swoon!
Heres our amazing upholsterer/wizard Kim Nash applying the covering fabric to the outside back of the divine chaisse. And coming up ... the big TA-DA.
Alright, now were getting somewhere. The chaisse has been fully-restored from the ground up and its ready for its fabulous new outfit, which, by the way, is a cloth from our favorite section of the fabric library. Hint: WILLIAM MORRIS.
And another day with the scary chaisse. You can see why its called a fainting lounge. This arm is enough to make anyone swoon. But not us. Were strong. And a bit ... numb. And did we mention theres a back to this thing? We dismantled the random pieces of wood holding it together and secured it with these two pieces of aluminium strapping fabricated by the brilliant Bryn Finer.
Further the chaisse project: After the springs are retied, they are covered and then its time to restitch the edge roll and add loose stuffings, in this case coir fibre. We also re-web the entire bottom to lift tired springs further. Stay tuned for the transformation.
BEFORE WE BREAK for a rest, our our poor swooning couch has been tidied up and springs retied. Now she can face the weekend feeling the promise of things to come! But weve only just begun. (waitll you see the fabric.)
THE PROJECT. OKAY, here we go. A fainting couch (antique lounge) so sad it makes you want to faint. Watch for progress on this baby over the next week. Unruly coil springs all over the place. LUCKILY: we are in the resuscitation business!
UPHOLSTERY ISNT EVERYTHING. Sometimes a slipcover is even better! Especially when Kim makes you one. Custom-fitted like a fine suit, or dress. If your chair or sofa is in solid condition you can have your upholstery and slipcover too!!! And just as many fabrics to choose from.
AND BTW: NO ANIMAL SHOULD ever jump up on the dining-room furniture unless absolutely certain that he can hold his own in the conversation. (Fran Lebowitz)
HERES A little family that went out today. Farewell, our lovelies!
HERES HOW TO TREAT a Sanderson fabric. With love! Our project: a lovely settee with drop-down arms in Golden Lily Morris print in linen union. Its drop-dead gorgeous.
YES, we have access to all of Sandersons stunning fabric line. And we know what to do with them!
JUST A REMINDER: We sell fabulous pillow inserts and can also order seating foam and other materials for your own projects!
ONE OF OUR favorite projects to celebrate the long weekend. Flowers everywhere!
Wild and wonderful!
AND FOLKS! Heres the chair that accompanies that fabulous mid-century modern sofa. We did NOT want to return these to our customer!
OUR LATEST PROJECT: This beautiful mid-century modern sofa. 8 Feet long. One seat cushion with buttoning. Teak trims, and legs which are placed in such a way that it seems to be floating. Picture this in a sunken living room!!! Picture also martinis.
How charming! Theres wallpaper and theres ... this.
HOW NEAT is this: William Morris wallpaper woodblock for printing. BTW BLUE VELVET can order WM wallpaper for you. BELOW: "Marigold" paper from woodblock.
A SMALL SAD STORY, with a happy ending: For years I languished in the damp, dark garage. I had begun to think: this is my life. Once a stylish, beloved sofa in a warm home full of light now a has-been, a shadow of my former self. I had pretty much given up. BUT THEN: My owners took me to see the girls at BLUE VELVET UPHOLSTERY, and, well here I am at home again in my room by the sea. Im just so damned happy. You can tell. OH AND FUN FACT: Its a good thing Im back, because it snowed forever yesterday/today and no ones going anywhere for the next three years.
