Happy Friday everyone! Our new facility has enabled us to become AAHA Accredited! What does this mean? AAHA stands for the American Animal Hospital Association. To earn this accreditation, there are 900 standards of excellence in veterinary care that we are evaluated on. Not only does this make a difference in the level of care to patients, including pain management, record keeping, and patient care, but it also influences the environment in the clinic. Good morning Blueberries. Most of you will recognize Lindsay, as she has been with us for 7 years now! Perhaps you have seen her smiling face when you walk your pet through the front door. Maybe it’s from talking to her on the phone as if you’ve known each other forever. It could be if your dog goes right to her because she is known as the treat lady in their eyes, or maybe it's all of the above. In any case, Lindsay has had a very big impact on your experience at the clin...ic. On top of everything she does for you and your pet, she is a hard-working, driven, and passionate leader to our team. Lindsay’s time as a Blueberry has come to a close. We are very sad to see Lindsay go and we will miss her so much, but she is happy to share that she is following her true passion and will be working in the equine field again! Leave a comment below on your favourite Lindsay memories <3

She also enjoys and excels in surgery. Lianna has two dogs of her own, both of whom travel everywhere with her and have lived in four countries so far! WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: EMERGENCY C-SECTION Ally is a beautiful Golden Doodle that had 7 healthy puppies throughout the night. The owners knew from a previous vet visit and radiograph that there could be 8 puppies total. They were concerned that there was a puppy stuck in the birth canal. When should you worry? ... Typically if the mother has strong contractions for longer than 1 hour with no progress, if there is over 3 hours between puppies/kittens, or if it’s over 72 days since breeding. Once arriving at our clinic, we took a lateral radiograph of Ally’s abdomen to determine if there was a puppy still present. As you can see in the first photo, one puppy remains and is quite high in the abdomen. Because it had been so long since the birth of the last puppy (approximately 7 hours), and the puppy wasn’t close to the end of the birth canal, an emergency C-section was required. Dr. Meagan performed the C-section surgery with RVT, Hannah, monitoring Ally under anesthetic. The puppy was removed from the uterine horn and immediately brought to Dr. Karin and RVT, Alexis, to try and revive the pup. The amniotic sac was removed and the puppy was wiped of excess fluid. While tilting the head down to drain fluid, the puppy was rubbed roughly to try and stimulate breathing. This should be done for as long as it takes the puppy to start breathing and vocalizing on its own. In this case, it took approximately 20 minutes! As you can see, it takes a whole team to take on this type of procedure! We are happy to report that mom and babies did very well! Let us know if you have any questions! Check out our Instagram page @blueberrycreekvet for videos as well!

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: ANAPLASMOSIS Good afternoon Blueberries, We’d like to chat about anaplasmosis today. We’ve recently seen an increase in the amount of dogs that are testing positive for anaplasmosis in-clinic.... What is Anaplasmosis? Similar to lyme disease, anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease. It is a disease that affects dogs but rarely affects cats. Anaplasmosis is a bacteria that enters the bloodstream and will live in the animals white blood cells, normally used in the body to fight infection. Therefore when an animal is Anaplasma positive, there can be inflammation throughout the body. What are the symptoms? Anaplasmosis can result in stiffness/painful joints, fever, loss of appetite, and more. What is the treatment? The prognosis is typically good and patients are treated with a course of antibiotics for approximately 2 weeks (case dependent). There is no vaccine to prevent anaplasmosis, therefore flea and tick prevention is your best bet to prevent this disease. Please ask us if you have any questions regarding tick borne diseases or parasite prevention! 613-264-2689.
