Lohbrunner Community Farm Co-operative 1152 Lippincott Road, Langford, www.lohbrunnercommunityfarm.org. Farmed since the 1940s, this land was saved from creeping development by Norma Lohbrunner, who placed it in a land trust to create a farm for the community. With an environmental studies background, Ariella’s been farming for 10 years; I love feeding people, growing the food, spending time outside. Sign up for the box program, pick blueberries and pumpkins, connect at the Goldstream and Metchosin markets.
The Old Apple Tree at Caleb Pike Park 9x12" WC by Elaine Hughes, in the 2021 Victoria & Circle Tour Art Calendar. Heritage apple trees surround the cabin that Caleb Pike and sons built in the Highlands in 1883, when it was a full day’s ride to Victoria and back.
Grilled Summer Squash and Eggplant from Lohbrunner Community Farm Co-op, the July recipe in the 2021 Victoria & Circle Tour Art Calendar Cut 2 - 3 eggplant, and zucchini and/ or summer squash (such as patty pan squash) into 1/2 inch thick slices (just cut in half if the summer squash are smaller). Sprinkle with salt. Whisk together 1/4 c olive oil, 2 tsp balsamic vinegar, and 1 1/2 - 2 tsp fresh or dry herbs (oregano, basil, summer savoury), and salt and pepper. Brush half over vegetable slices. Place on greased grill over medium heat; close lid and grill, turning once and brushing with remaining oil mixture, until tender, about 10 minutes. - Ariella Falkowski, Lohbrunner Community Farm, 1152 Lippincott Road, Langford, www.lohbrunnercommunityfarm.org. Over 40 varieties of certified organic produce in box programs, U-pick, and at markets.
The Fisgard Lighthouse 9x12" WC by Elaine Hughes, in the 2021 Victoria & Circle Tour Art Calendar. Once past Race Rocks, mariners heading to Victoria look for Fisgard Lighthouse, in operation since 1860, the first on our west coast. This was a prizewinner at the Colwood Fisgard Festival.
Tide Pools at Botanical Beach 15x22" WC by Elaine Hughes, in the 2021 Victoria & Circle Tour Art Calendar. Rich tide pools in soft sandstone led the University of Minnesota to open a marine research station here in 1900. Look for sea stars, sea urchins, chitons, mussels, and barnacles at low tide.
Jennifer Lawson is the October artist in the Victoria Art Calendar! I feel so fortunate to walk through life - literally, every day - seeing one painting after another, constantly composing in my head. Walking, like watercolour, is full of ‘happy surprises’, something we don’t get enough of as adults. www.jenniferlawsonart.com
Keating Estate, Watercolour by Jennifer Lawson, in the Victoria & Circle Tour Art Calendar. Jennifer was thrilled to visit with a friend before the Estate was sold out of The Land Conservancy It was an artist’s dream - the heritage barns, orchard, and the main farmhouse with its unique Great Hall, built in 1894.
Anne-Marie Harvey is the October artist in the Okanagan Art Calendar! Beginning as a sign painter to support her art, Anne-Marie developed a love for calligraphy. The transition from thick to thin is like a dance, creating shifting shapes by turning the brush as it moves across the canvas. I feel like I’m tuning in to the great dance of life as I paint. www.anne-marieharvey.com
