Whether you knew Mr. Finck or not, he’s the reason most kids have a lacrosse stick in their hands in Nova Scotia. I was lucky enough to have him as my gym teach...er at Rockingham Elementary. I remember getting to class early one day and saw him playing catch on the wall by himself. I walked up to him and said what’s that? he replied you’ll find out in today's class. I ran into the locker room, changed into my gym clothes, ran back out onto the court and their laid 20 lacrosse sticks. Some kids looked at the sticks in confusion, some used them as hockey sticks and a few kids picked up the stick naturally. Mr. Finck started to play catch on the wall as he was when I first got to class. He said everyone grab a ball and start doing this. The moment my classmates picked up that ball with theirs hands, placed it into that fresh white mesh and threw it against the wall, lacrosse Nova Scotia would never look the same. I was hooked instantly, running home after school to ask for $50 from my parents. Then running back to the school to buy a stick from Mr. Finck before he left for the day. I brought that stick everywhere, math, music, history, art, you name the class I had it with me. One day me and my buddies were playing catch with an Indian rubber ball at recess and hit an innocent bystander. Mr. Finck got word of this and called us into his office, he said boys, if you’re gonna play the game that much, just come to the gym at recess and I’ll run you through some drills. Drills? I thought, I didn’t know lacrosse had drills, I thought you just played catch with your friends, almost like hacky sack. Going to the gym at recess with my buddies to play lacrosse with Mr. Finck were some of the best memories I have to this day. Looking back on it now, I have such a different appreciation for that time. He spent his break from a busy work day to help us improve our game and love the sport of Lacrosse. He would say Okay Justin, we’re going to shuffle up and down the gym while we catch the ball back and fourth I would shuffle so hard, pass the ball so hard by the time recess was up I’d go back to class and stink up the whole room. It was like boot camp for me, I took that 20 minute recess break so serious, just to gain a little bit more knowledge on the game. Our first ever organized Lacrosse game was at The Spryfield Lions Rink on a hot June night. The referees didn't know how to properly start a Lacrosse game, so Mr. Finck had to give them a quick lesson on what a face-off looked like while the rest of the players waited for the game to start. I think the refs were going to do a jump ball like they do in basketball, anyways, it's a good thing Mr. Finck was there. Little moments like that are what made Wayne a great man. He cared about the game and he cared about the people he taught it to. I must of drove him crazy with the amount of questions I asked him on a daily basis. He took the time to answer every question with a smile, and then he'd show me how to do it. He was a great man and will be missed by many. Thanks for everything Mr. Finck, see you on the other side. - Justin Belanger Wayne Finck
