The Palisade Lookout is the site of an old fire lookout. It is long gone, but the old access road to the site makes for a great 11 km ski to the top for panoramic views over the Athabasca River valley far below, all the way out to the foothills. #jaspernp #jaspernationalpark #parkscanada... #myjasper #venturebeyond #explorealberta #explorecanada #canadianrockies #sonyphotography See more

One of Jasper National Park's classics: Sunwapta Falls on a surprisingly quiet Sunday during the Christmas holidays. Here the waters of the Sunwapta River (meaning turbulent river in Nakoda) plunge into a narrow gorge a few km before it empties into the Athabasca River. #jaspernp... #jaspernationalpark #parkscanada #myjasper #venturebeyond #explorealberta #explorecanada #canadianrockies #sonyphotography See more

Boxing Day One can get out early to beat the (virtual) line-ups in the box stores for some deals, or one can get out early to beat the crowds at Pyramid Island in Jasper National Park. I prefer the latter. Selfie on a snowy morning in Jasper National Park.... #JasperNP #jaspernationalpark #VentureBeyond #explorecanada #explorealberta #canadianrockies

Today is #WorldCleanupDay, which is great, but rather than having to clean up, we should start by polluting less in the first place. Last week we were in a remote alpine valley in Jasper National Park and beside this beautiful alpine lake at 2000 m we found - the remnants of a helium party balloon! I would have floated there, probably from the west, over the mountains. Someone enjoyed it for maybe an hour or so, before it drifted away... out of sight, out of mind. So the ne...xt time you consider buying a helium-filled balloon, think of where it could end up. That is aside form the other issues with using rare helium to fill balloons... #ParksCanada #JasperNP #CanadianRockies #pollution See more

Yellowhead Pass is one of the lower passes in the Canadian Rockies. It's been used for travel and trade by indigenous peoples for millennia; European traders followed in their footsteps. In the 1870s, the area was surveyed for the Canadian Pacific railroad that was to connect BC to the rest of Canada. Sir Stanford Fleming recommended that the CPR be built through this pass, as it was much more accessible than Kickinghorse and Rogers Passes. However, he was overruled and the g...overnment chose the much more treacherous Kickinghorse Pass route instead. In the early 1900s, the Grand Truck Pacific and Canadian Northern Railways both built raillines through the pass. Both companies went bankrupt and were merged into Canadian National (CN). The Yellowhead highway follows parts of the route of one of the railways. The pass is named for Pierre Bostonais, an Iroquois/métis trader nicknamed Tête Jaune, who traded in the area. The pass is now a National Historic Site. Photo: Portal Lake picnic area and the pass at sunset. Few people bother to stop at the Rocky River in eastern Jasper National Park on their way to the better know sights in the park. Yet this is actually the junction of some of the most significant travelling routes in the park. The Athabasca Valley, centre, has been a major travel corridor for centuries, but the Rocky River, left, provided important connection towards Maligne Lake and the south, while the Snake Indian Valley, right rear, provided an important route towards the... north. It is no winder that some of the oldest evidence of indigenous use (10,000 years+) was found nearby. This is also one of the reasons that Jasper House (right of centre along the Athabasca River) was located here. Now the Snake Indian and especially the Rocky River valleys are rarely travelled, but the Athabasca River valley continues to be a major national travel corridor, with Highway 16, the CN main line, the Trans Mountain pipeline and a fibre optic line. Exploring the alpine slopes of upper Nigel Creek in the very northeastern corner of Banff National Park, far from the crowds in the more popular areas of the park. The view extends all the way to Waterfowl and Bow Lakes and beyond. There is still a lot of snow for this time of the year, but summer is slowly creeping up the slopes. #banffnp #banffnationalpark #mybanff... #parkscanada #explorealberta #explorecanada #canadianrockies #sonyphotography See more

In the Canadian Rockies, there are four vehicle-accessible alpine passes: Highwood Pass in K-Country, Bow Summit in Banff, Sunwapta Pass on the Banff-Jasper border, and a fourth one that tends to be forgotten: The Cardinal Divide in Wildhorse Wildland Provincial Park. To get there, travel south from Highway 16 near Hinton along Highway 40 to the village of Cadomin. From there you follow the rough gravel road to the Cheviot coal mine, paralleling the giant coal haul road. You ...eventually end up at 2025 m, on the Divide. Water flowing north from here flows into the Athabasca River and the Arctic Ocean, water to the south ends up via the North Saskatchewan River basin in Hudson Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. From the viewpoint there are a Cardinal Divide West and an East Trail. The eastern branch climbs gradually for 1.3 km to the nearby ridge, from where you can walk another 2.5 km (one way) along the escarpment to a high point, while enjoying with stunning views over the McLeod River Valley, the foothills and the Mountain Wall that is Jasper's eastern boundary. Underfoot, the area is laterally carpeted with wildflowers. Medicine Lake in Jasper National Park is like a bathtub. In the winter it is (nearly) dry because the sink holes that drain the lake can keep up with the inflow of water. But as the snow upstream starts to melt, the sink holes can no longer keep up and the lake fills up. In most years, the lake itself is big enough to contain the incoming water, but in years of heavy rain and/or a late snow melt, like this year, the lake fills up completely and empties over its lower edge. N...ot only is the lake pretty with all the extra water, but downstream, all the way to Maligne Canyon the water is showing off its immense power as well. The lake feeds one of the largest underground karst systems in the country; much of the water from the lake reappears as springs further downstream. There is still a lot of snow to melt in the Alpine, so the lake level may well rise even further in the coming days or weeks. #jaspernp #jaspernationalpark #parkscanada #myjasper #venturebeyond #explorealberta #explorecanada #canadianrockies #sonyphotography

Insanely high water in Jasper National Park today. The recent rain has melted a LOT of the deep snow that is still lingering in the alpine. All the rivers are raging and some roads and trails have become navigable!

With some major rainfall and still lots of snow to melt, this weekend the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park has turned into a brown torrent. Athabasca Falls was a sight to behold today! Quite appropriate for Canadian Rivers Day. The section of the Athabasca River within Jasper National Park is one of Canada's 40 Heritage Rivers. Spring melt in Jasper National Park is in full swing now. Water from the mountains around Maligne Lake enters the Maligne River and makes its way to Medicine Lake and the Athabasca River. Eventually it will reach the Arctic Ocean, some 3000 km away.

Dancing for joy These Golden-mantled groundsquirrels are ecstatic because Jasper National Park has opened to the public again. Since these bold critters show no shame when begging for hand-outs, they'll be happy to finally see unsuspecting visitors pull up to the meadows where they live.
